giminy you guys are NUTS!!! I drink GOOD coffee, I'm in Seattle (well outside of it, far outside actually, like west, on the peninnsula. but we gave Seattle coffee lessons!). but seriously, I've traveled and been in coffee houses in most of western Europe, and this simple little coffee press and a grinder makes my socks go up and down. when I first bought the press it was a whopping $15. now it's almost $17 oh my!

On the basis of our experience with them, we bought other Sunbeam "Cafe Series" products. They were all...well, let's just say they were adequate consumer appliances.

Saying that, if our machine had experienced an unrecoverable failure (FUBAR), we'd be starting again by looking at something like the Sylvia. I know that The Loved One wants the Rocky grinder, for starters.

Incidentally, that Di Bella coffee...if you go for a new machine, check out the prices of their coffee beans. We buy 3kg at a time, and the price, delivered, for fresh-roasted beans, is not what you'd necessarily expect. We're tightarses here, so we wouldn't be buying them if they weren't reasonably priced.

(Sorry, I did read that you used to run a cafe at Mooloolaba, and know that you'd know more than me 'bout all this - I'm just letting my enthusiasm run off at the mouth. )

Cheers,
Marc
I don't know anything about home espresso machines. WE have a stove top espresso that has not seen the light of day for ages (too lazy) Don't even have proper coffee in the house at the moment.

The cafe thing was 10 years ago and it was an Auto Rancilio (bluddy good coffee - we used Vittoria back then it was one of the few roasted in Oz).

I saw the DiBella thing on the TV a few months ago. Another good tip

Cheers Snake

...
When I was there in 2000, I went to Espresso Vivace up on, I think, Capitol Hill(?). David Schomer's reputation is world-wide (we've one of his books), and deservedly so. Up until the bloke with the orange, pony-tail hair at Di Bella made me a coffee, my few coffees there were the best I'd ever had. And pony-tail may have just got lucky, or memory may have obscured my objectivity. If I was in Seattle again, that's where I'd be drinking my coffee.

The stovetop we used while our machine was broke was pretty easy, even if it required watching. It made the best of the non-espresso coffee (type), as I don't like filter or French press/plunger. I'd not used one before, so I was pleased at that. Still, "real" espresso is hard to beat.

I didn't know they were on the telly. I really must pay attention (Tivo: the ad-killer).

'Course, aside from that Seattle memory (the cafe itself was one of those places with an atmosphere worth remembering - there's probably a picture at the above link somewhere), my fondest coffee memory was drinking from my huge, light blue, enamel mug some steaming, milky, sweet instant coffee (International Roast, I think) made from billy-heated water, sitting on a fold-up camp chair under the annex of the tent watching the sun set over the western valleys of the Snowy Mountains, and feeling the temperature drop by about 10C in 10 minutes when it did. That's a warm memory, right there.

Cheers,
Marc

I don't think it was an ad. I think it was one of them lifestyle things or even a kids show. Maybe it wasn't them, but I am pretty sure it was Brisvegas.

Seattle coffee rocks! I love the caramel lattes from the street vendors.

My body doesn't tolerate coffee too well. So I don't drink it.

Last night I drank about 2 fluid ounces of Mateus wine while I watched television. This morning, a glass of 2 percent fat cow's milk.

For caffeine, I drink Barq's Root Beer. No alcohol in it, its a soda pop, soda, or pop. I drink water as well.
