The fact that they still need a few weeks when they already released a working software is quite incomprehensible for me, but it's still better than nothing.
I got the following answer from bookeen support:
Quote:
The firmware version that you currently have is not able to read txt and html file, you will be able to read them again with the next firmware upgrade, coming in a few weeks. Sorry for the trouble occasioned by this momentary incompatibility.
That was on Thursday, May 7 2009... Just to let you know what a few weeks means in bookeen terminology.

I'm resigned to forking over another £200 or so to a different manufacturer, although I'm not sure quite who yet. If anyone wants my Gen3, they should check eBay over the next couple of months. I won't bother anyone here with the link. I will continue to follow Bookeen liars around the Net, in case anyone else might get sucked in.
Well, if the reason you want to change you cybook is ePub or folders, then, there's a good advice, don't waste your money.

It won't make the firmware comes sooner, obviously, but if it can prevent someone to make the same mistake than me, I will keep on saying how absud their politic is.
As if peaple paid attention to that crap.
And admiting it have some effect, less sells, less money, less devlopers, less update. Everyone loses.

By your line of reasoning we should lie about Bookeen and make more people buy their cybook and maybe buy another one for ourselves, and THEN Bookeen will have enough money to release a firmware.
Is that why they lie about the firmware themselves? I see different stores selling the cybook stating that you can read epub on the device with a firmware update. It's simply not true, because the firmware update isn't available. Making their claim that you can read epub on the device a lie, making their claim that it will happen within a "few weeks" a lie, making their claim that it will be released "soon" a lie.

Btw I've gotten so far that I would love Bookeen to go out of business, as I think they've had enough chances to be honest with their customers but they keep failing. A lying company SHOULD go out of business.
I paid good money for a device and expect the company that sold it to me, to be honest with me and take me serious as a customer. All I get is lies, censorship of my questions on their blog and their overall disdain for me as customer.

Since Eowyn doesn't think me saying this, makes any difference I can do it as much as I want: If you're thinking about buying an e-reader from Bookeen: DON'T! There are companies out there that DO care about you as a customer. Buy from them instead!

They do, at least smart people do.

But what you are saying is that people are not allowed to complain about Bookeen because maybe they will sell less products? The truth about Bookeens "fantastic" communication skills may not be said? And if we are good children daddy Bookeen will give us the firmware in a few weeks (= soon)? Sure!

Sorry but that's ridiculous, somewhat creepy and not fair to future customers. Maybe if they give us a good functioning (or any) firmware update the general tone will change (anytime SOON! )

As stated elsewhere I actually suggested that Bookeen release the firmware AS IS (without any DRM) on the assumption that some legal mumbo jumbo was what was keeping me from starting to actually WORK (not just read) with my CyBook (I need a mobile ePub platform to showcase stuff for customers).

They did that thing in Paris where you could bring your GEN3 to Paris and get the new firmware there, did anybody take them up on that?? (Only non-french people need reply, I don't trust anything a Frenchman (or woman) says anymore )

That, why didn't buy a reader that do support ePub if that was important to you ??

Emm...

http://bookeen.com/specs/ebook-CybookGen3.aspx

That page says, and I quote...
Note: Adobe® ePUB/PDF Reader support can be available via firmware upgrade. Adobe and Mobipocket DRMs can not be supported at the same time.

And take a look at Adobe's page : http://www.adobe.com/products/digitaleditions/devices/
There is the Gen3 advertised as having ePub.

I dont know much about law, but I did manage to find this

Part 2
General rules of market conduct

Misleading, derogatory references etc.

3. Incorrect, misleading or unreasonably perfunctory statements designed to influence demand for or supply of products, real property, other property, labour and services must not be employed.
(2) Subsection 1 also applies to statements that are unwarrantable when made to other traders or consumers as a result of their form or because they relate to immaterial matters.
(3) Misleading practices similar in significance for supply and demand to those referred to in subsection 1 or equivalent practices must not be employed insofar as they are unwarrantable when employed vis-à-vis other traders or consumers as a result of their specific form or because they relate to immaterial matters.
(4) Where factual statements are made, these must be capable of being substantiated by documentation.
And from the Bookeen blog...

Bookeen present at MobileRead meetup in Paris
Hello,

As you may know, we are on the verge to release our new Cybook Opus and will introduce it to the MobileRead community during their French meetup in Paris. There will be some hands-on demos and Bookeen people will be there to answer your questions.

In parallel, we will propose (in avant-première and during the meet-up) to Cybook GEN3 possessors to upgrade their devices with the - long awaited - new firmware.

So don't forget your Cybooks!
Did anybody do that ??

"Say, Pierre; you know that upgrade we said we'd put onto the server for all our customers to get hold of"
"Yep - you mean the one we took to the Paris meet"
"Certainly I mean that one"
"mmmm, what about it?"
"Well, you said you'd put it onto the server...."
"I did."
"AH - so why do we keep getting emails from customers who can't find it"
"Don't know - ask Michelle"
"Michelle; do you know why customers cannot download the latest firmware for their Gen3s and the Opus?"
"Oi; we haven't quite finished it yet"
"Ah !!!! Why not?"
"Because you haven't added the thingy into the code, yet"
"Yes I have"
"No you have not"
"Ohhhh yes I have ..... look it says so there in the log ... "
"If you have, then why have we not put the software onto the server?"
"Because that's your job"
"No it's not"
"Yes it is, it says so on your job description"
"Ah non - that's not by job description, that's my coding error portfolio....."

Scene fades away to a tapestry as the spider on the wall slowly unravels itself from the cobweb of fantasy land. He drops slowly down onto the server and continues to wrap it tightly with sticky threads onto which more moths, flies and the odd beetle become attached.

Meanwhile in a dark room a man sits quietly with eyes closed.........he finally finishes the filter routine and attaches it to the email program....
"That'll fix that, any queries with the word firmware anywhere in the message will be automatically deleted without being read .... "
