If you go to the Bluestacks site and download the Bluestackers installer, if you have a 32-bit OS, it installs the 32-bit version. If you have a 64-bit OS, it installs the 64-bit version. What it doesn't do is let you choose. If you manually download the 32-bit "offline" installer, it will stop you and won't install that on a 64-bit OS, and direct you to the other installer. I can't say if it's changed since you tried it, or if you perhaps have 32-bit Windows installed to begin with, but if you're running 64-bit there isn't a way to "install the 32-bit version of Bluestacks", so to speak. So that advice won't assist folks stuck with that problem. Last edited by sphilip; 09-19-2024 at 06:06 PM. |

I just realized you mean when creating the virtual Android instance, this whole time I was trying to install the 32-bit version of Bluestacks, the program! Sorry.
It does seem like they've still blocked root access to the data folder though, which is a bummer. |

I know that getting a useful backup.ab is only possible on the really old Android app. (One that can have the key extracted from it.) Amazon blocked that on later versions. Accessing where the books are stored isn't an issue. Just that Amazon has now blocked new books from downloading to the old app. I haven't messed with it since that happened. At least at the moment, other much easier methods are working.

So does the Kindle for Android method still work for anyone? I.e., should I remove it as an option on the Dealing with Kindle ebooks in calibre thread?

So, I happened on this thread late, and am currently working my way through the process. Here's what I've done so far:
Using an actual Android device (LG GPad 5), running Android 9 (developer tools already enabled), I installed 4.16.... of Kindle for Android, then signed into the app (so it knew who I was and what books I had available). I then downloaded ("Download To Home") the books that I wanted to import into Calibre. Next, using a laptop computer running Ubuntu 22.04, I installed the ADB tools (using apt install adb). All good there. Used ADB to copy across the key backup (backup.ab), which resulted in a file about 17M in size. Downloaded DeDRM from the NoDRM/DeDRM Github page, and installed it into Calibre. Added the backup.ab key successfully (I believe - at least, it prompted me for a name for the key, and it shows up when I try to configure the DeDRM plugin). Next, I copied from the Android device to the computer the PRC files that I had downloaded using K4A. Then, as I understand things, I use Add Books to add them to the Calibre library, at which time they should be automagically stripped of DRM, so that they can be used as a backup in case something bad ever happens to Amazon ![]() This is where my problem begins - when I import the PRC files into Calibre, they go through the import process, and all the metadata seems to come through no problem, and they show up in the library list. But when I go to view one (using the ebook viewer built into Calibre), it says the file still has DRM and can't be viewed. I can expand on any of the steps I took, if needed, or supply more information about devices/software used. I am reading through the thread, but so far I'm only to page 15 out of about 45 pages. But so far, I haven't seen a report of this problem occurring. So, please, somebody tell me that I'm stupid and where I made my wrong turn ![]() |

Some additional information. Based on other hints in the reading I've done (I think I'm up to page 20 now), I extracted the backup.ab file, and found the map_data_storage.db file, and attempted to add that key to DeDRM. It complained, saying it was the same as the previously stored key. So it looks like I did get the key added successfully - but it still won't remove the DRM.
Pointers welcome... |

Open an issue over at noDRM's GitHub and post a debug log of adding one of your books to calibre.

I'm running 10.0.9, which I believe is the RC beta. I haven't tried to download the alpha version.

Additional information - some of the books that I was attempting to convert don't seem to work on the K4A reader, either. When I download them then try to open them, they say "Invalid Item - Please remove the item from your device and go to All Items to download it again". So that may be part of the problem as well. I'm going to see if I can get it to open on the K4A app first, before I go trying to produce a debug log and post an issue. It is kind of weird, though, that I actually do get a PRC file for these books... |

Amazon been busy plugging holes. When I wrote up the guide for high res, kfx was not broken yet. It later was possible to remove drm from kfx files in K4PC until it didn't work anymore with the newest version of K4PC. My old install of K4A 8.51 in Bluestacks still downloads prc files with removable DRM, but as I mentioned, it may no longer be possible to get it working. |

The real fun was finding the Bluestacks version I originally installed since I ended up digging into some backups to find it. |

eta: Not that using an older calibre is neccessarily an issue. People were using this workaround before calibre 7 came out. Last edited by lkmiller; 11-29-2024 at 05:19 AM. |
