nix-shell -p openssl calibre --run calibre
This stands up a temporary environment that contains both openssl and calibre, and runs calibre. Because I've got both in my configuration.nix, they're already installed and nothing needs to download. It just starts up and works.

I think this can also be accomplished with a flake, but I'm still learning a ton, so I don't have that figured out yet. For now, I just edited my calibre .desktop file to use the nix-shell command and it just works.

Thank-you. It looks like that worked. I am also trying to figure out what you can do with flakes. Maybe figuring out how to do this with a flake will provide some motivation.
