The sixth book in Bernard Cornwall's "The Last Kingdom" series is currently just £0.99 at Amazon UK.

The Death of Kings.

I don't know why it's discounted. It's not one of the daily deals. But since I have books 1-5, (and have read 1-4), I'd getting this one now.

$1.99 in US. Maybe to help get ready for Season 4? Season 3 was based on books 5 & 6.

FREE! War and Peace: W/ bonus material from Give War and Peace A Chance . . . .

Many of you know that I am a confirmed non-fictionist. Consequently, I don't know anything about which books of fiction are good, and which ones aren't, without doing research on the ones that I come across.

I've heard of this one. I think that it's a reprint.

All 1024 pages of it are free. This should be a good-quality edition--it's published by Simon & Schuster.

War and Peace: With bonus material from Give War and Peace A Chance by Andrew D. Kaufman.

Description, from Amazon:
War and Peace is considered one of the world’s greatest works of fiction. It is regarded, along with Anna Karenina, as Tolstoy’s finest literary achievement.

Epic in scale,
War and Peace delineates in graphic detail events leading up to Napoleon’s invasion of Russia, and the impact of the Napoleonic era on Tsarist society, as seen through the eyes of five Russian aristocratic families.

Find out more here. It's also available at Christianbook (ePub, DRM Protected). I've got a hunch that it's probably available at other venues as well.

It's the Aylmer Maude translation which is in the public domain, so it's freely available elsewhere.

The Dunnigan translation of War and Peace from 1968 is supposed to be one of the best. It's not free, but it is available for $1.99 at Amazon US. War and Peace (Signet Classics)

Here's the section of the Wikipedia article talking about the different English translations available: Comparing translations

(I went down a War and Peace rabbit hole a few months ago).

Yes, but do any of them have the bonus material from Give War and Peace a Chance?

Genuine thanks for the additional information. Many, I'm sure, will profit from it. I occasionally run into this situation trying to find the best (as determined by several criteria) translation of an ancient writing--of non-fictional works and, yes, to my eternal shame, some fictional works.

The Simon & Schuster edition is sometimes free and sometimes 99 cents.
(I went down a War and Peace rabbit hole a few months ago).
The maps in the Simon & Schuster edition might be better (based on the large difference in file size). I haven't read it yet, but the maps are reasonably good in the Simon & Schuster edition. FWIW, the Simon & Schuster edition has Xray enabled and the Signet edition does not.

The Simon & Schuster is sometimes free and sometimes 99 cents.

War and Peace: The Inner Sanctum Edition with Reader's Guide [The Maudes] -- (UNABRIDGED) This translation by Louise and Aylmer Maude was originally published in 1922. It has been a huge favorite with "War and Peace" fans for many years. There are numerous editions of Maude but I like the Inner Sanctum Edition best... I've read this translation twice and it combines most of the best features of the others in that the bulk of the French language text (about 2% of the book) has been translated directly to English (no footnotes for this)... Only the Maudes worked directly with Tolstoy himself and, thus, gained his personal endorsement.
This is the version GtrsRGr8 linked to. It's a whopping 99 cents now.

Quote:
War and Peace (Signet classics) [Dunnigan] -- (UNABRIDGED) Ann Dunnigan was born in Hollywood and here she has presented us with a very nice contemporary (1968) "American English" version of Tolstoy's Magnum opus. I found the translation itself to be quite competently rendered and most of the text reads straight through with no footnotes to deal with for the French language parts. If you're an American, and plan to read War and Peace only one time, and you're a really busy person who likes to read during windows of time, then this is likely your top choice.
This is the version I shared and it's an outrageous $1.99.

The last sentence in the Signet classics quote is me exactly. So I'll probably read that one. But I bought both.

War and Peace is exactly the kind of book where X-ray would be a huge boon. But I converted these to ePub to read on my Kobo, so I'm outta luck whichever edition I choose

I'm putting this in Literature (here), but it does contain some elements of SF. It appears to be a dystopian satire. I love 'reviewers' who say a book is too literary to be science fiction. Give me Perry Rodent [sic] any day!!!

I had "The Colony" by Jillian Weise on my Wish List. It was priced at $9.99 and has now gone down to $1.99

I don't know when this happened, but here's the link if anyone may be interested:

I despair of the reading level of the average reviewer these days! That's why I don't bother reading reviews from strangers. At least not in a way that assumes they're an authority. Too many can't handle anything over YA.

All Clavell's books are worth a read and IMO this one is second only to Shogun.
