Think I'm going to give up. I can't see myself actually installing Ubisoft's Uplay (it has very invasive DRM). Was planning to grab them just in case I ever changed my mind, or Ubisoft decided to stop being assholes about DRM. (Although that'll probably be sometime after the heat death of the universe. ![]() |

FREE Audio Extractor, from Giveaway of the Day.
Ever want to strip the audio from a video that you own, for listening on your MP3 player or whatever?
Well, one of two GiveawayoftheDay.com (GAOTD) giveaways for today is mov Audio Extractor, version 9.1.5. It says that it "is able to extract audios from video files." GAOTD has at least one free giveaway each day. Some of them are quite good (case in point, WinUtilities, that they gave away a couple of weeks ago). Users rate the giveaways; I consider 75% positive (assuming a large enough number of ratings for the figure to be valid) to be the minimum, for me to consider downloading it. Raters on the site can be pretty . . . to put it nicely . . . demanding, and a figure that high is usually a guarantee of quality. At the present moment it is rated 76% positive. If you think that you might be interested in the software, do check ratings elsewhere, though, and when you do, try to make sure that the ratings are for the version as close as possible to 9.1.5, which, again, is what this one is. Here's the URL for the Giveaway of the Day webpage for this free software. I think that each day's giveaways end at 3 a.m. Eastern time. |

Ready for another download of free classical music?
I know that it's hard to keep track of the different classical music websites with free downloads. This one is Classical-music.com's, they offer a new free download weekly, and it is in MP3. This week's freebie is 'Allegro Assai' from Mozart's String Quartet in B flat major. Here's some more info: . . . . Mozart confessed he worked long and hard on his six string quartets dedicated to his idol Haydn, perhaps wondering if he could match the character of the older composer's themes and vigour of argument. They are some of the most richly textured and lustrous sounding quartets ever, and they have rarely sounded more beautiful than in this recording by the Hagen quartet. The disc was BBC Music Magazine Chamber Choice in April. 'The recording is intimate, as though we are seated in a salon a few feet from the performers,' writes Bayan Northcott. 'The players bring an astonishing variety of vibrato, nuance and colour to this performance.' Classical-music.com is the website where you have to log in first, and then click on a download link on the thumbnail of the cover of the album located at this webpage. |

If you're a fan of Hallmark movies/shows and similar content Hallmark has a special offer going right now. Subscribe to their Feeln streaming service and pay for 2 years worth ($69.99) and get a free Roku 2.
https://www.feeln.com Not sure how long the offer is available, but I'm guessing until the end of July as they're doing their annual Christmas in July stuff right now. |

Free movie from Google Play. This is another of those movies they're doing free before it even hit theaters, like they did with the animated movie Bling.

Since the 11th, I've tried multiple times to register an account in multiple browsers: Firefox, Palemoon (a Firefox fork that I use as my main) and Internet Explorer. All of them did the same thing: it just gave a loading animation and never actually loaded the signup form. Today I finally decided to try Google Chrome. I used a portable install of it. (I just don't want to deal with Google's auto-updater.) And guess what? It worked, first try. So if you've wanted to take advantage of this but couldn't get signed up, try again with Chrome. You can always use the portable version. That runs an installer, but the installer just makes a portable version in the directory you select for it. You can move the directory, even put it on a flash drive, and still run it from there. And you can delete it afterward if you want. Once you have an account you can login just fine in Firefox/Palemoon/Internet Explorer. Edit: Oh, and this month's game is Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell. |

FREE Teacher's Guides on Some MODERN Books that People Really Like to Read.
These are not really formatted as books or even as pamphlets, so I feel that it's best to post them here on this thread.
Random House maintains a website for high school teachers. I don't know how many MobileReaders might be one of those, but I found that there's some information on the site that might be of interest to a variety of readers (and we all do have interest in reading in common, right?). At www.randomhouse.com/highschool, there is a choice on the menu bar at the top of the page for "resources." In the drop down menu there are links for "author profiles," "conferences," "lesson plans," and "teacher's guides." What I find special about the books that are covered is that they aren't the old, dry, boring junk that we were force fed in classes in high school and that we had to take at a liberal arts college years ago in order to get a degree in a completely unrelated field. No siree, many of these are very modern books (all published by Random House or a related company, I'm sure, though) that real, normal people read all of the time for enjoyment. I find the teacher's guides to be of special interest. If you ignore the stuff in them of special interest to teachers, you have some pretty good material to use for learning for yourself about the contents and meaning of various books. Sure, you can find some good or even great material on the Internet (I'm thinking especially of CliffNotes) about books, but are you going to find it about recent, popular books? Oh, doing a spot check, I found that some of the teacher's guides are in pdf; but some, unfortunately, are just in html. If you want to convert the html ones to pdf for some reason, I highly recommend an extension to the Chrome browser called "Print Friendly & PDF." Too, links to the teacher's resources on individual webpages for the books are not consistently in one place, so you might need to use the Ctrl+F (find) function on your computer. I think that your effort will be worth it. Last edited by GtrsRGr8; 07-24-2016 at 06:25 PM. |

Google Play currently has Foreigner's album called Records marked down to $1.99. This is the direct link to the album's webpage.
The album is a compilation of their hits, but only through 1981. But arguably (I'm a person who would argue in its favor) those are the years when they produced their best stuff. There are a few other albums on sale for $1.99. None of them are compilation of hits, just ordinary albums, unless you count the soundtrack to the movie Cocktail (link to its webpage). Sorry, there are no 99 cent albums at all this time (boo!, hiss!). If you wish to view all of the albums from the 1980's that Google has marked down at the present time, head to this webpage. Ignore what it says about prices starting at $6.99--as I mentioned, there are several less in price than that. |

I too hope they haven't moved off of $0.99 as their price point for a few sale albums in each "collection", but $1.99 is quite reasonable for some of these - I'll just be a little less willing to say "WTH" and try something I haven't heard before. I was happy to also find Heartbeat City by The Cars at $1.99 as well - as GtrsRGr8 says, it's not a compilation or greatest hits, but I like several of the songs on the album, so it's well worth it to me.

It's Tuesday, so it's Classical-music.com's day to give us a free MP3 download. And they don't disappoint us. This week it's Liszt's 'Wilde Jadg'.
This week’s free download is Franz Liszt’s Etude No. 8 'Wilde Jagd' (Wild Hunt) from his 12 Transcendental Etudes. The title refers to a common legend in European folklore, but it’s not a bunch of hunters chasing their prey, it’s about a hoard of ghost riders chasing us to oblivion. In some German versions of the story, as the ghosts ride by hollering and screaming, sometimes beautiful music is also heard, something that’s then considered a good omen, even when the rest of the story is rather ominous. Kirill Gerstein says: 'as in the rest of the Transcendental Etudes cycle, here Liszt manages to combine incredible virtuosic challenges with impressionistic tone-painting, poetical lyricism and the romantic fascination with the otherworldly'. Go to this webpage to download the piece. Remember that you've got to be logged in to see the "Download Now" button for you to click on to get the freebie. |
