I've downloaded calibre already twice but I've still got the same problem.
A lot of the buttons and the titles of the books are shown in some weird font.

here is a screenshot:

Go to Preferences->Look and Feel and change the language to English from Russian, then restart calibre.

Is there a way to flag books to transfer when the reader is next connected?

Often, when working in Calibre, I don't have my reader hooked up. When I finish fixing up a book, I'd like to flag it to be copied to the reader when it's next connected.

The closest thing I can think of right now is to add a custom tag or column and filter by it when I hook the reader up. Sadly, I'd have to manually remove that tag when I finish transferring.

I use 'Last edited': Date type
Sort the column. All the ducks are now in a row.

If you click the cursor over a blank date and tap F2, today is filled in auto-magically (changing requires an edit or click the "Today" button in the meta-data editor. If I see a blank date, I have edit work to do (still )

I thought I saw this infor some where but can not find it:

Is there a way to download Kindle books somewhere other than directly to the Kindle, so that I can edit the metadata before sending it over? I tried sending the books to Kindle to PC first, but that made them unreadable on the Kindle itself.

Or barring that. Is there a way to update the metadata and resend the book without creating a duplicate on the Kindle?

Yes, you can go to "Manage Your Kindle" and at the bottom where it lists your eBooks you can choose "Transfer to Computer..." in the "deliver to" drop down. This will let you download the ebook encrypted for your Kindle. If you have more than one kindle it will ask which Kindle you are getting the file for.

Thanks, theducks, that helps.
Still, it would be nice to be able to queue books up for adding to the reader... ah well, I'm sure it won't be long before Kovid makes Calibre read books for us. =]

Edit: Oops, I see it's on the todo list.

I apologize if this has been aswered, but I can't find it.

I have a book in ePub where the space before every italicized word is missing. I've tried using search & replace, but simply having <span class="italic"> in the search field and
<span class="italic"> and pressing the space bar in the replace field does not work.

I tried typing
<span class="italic">[a-zA-Z]
in the search field and
<span class="italic"> [a-zA-Z]
in the replace field, but while this finds all of the instances on the test screen, it actually adds "[a-zA-Z]" before every italicized word.

I'm sure there's something simple I am overlooking. I was able to remove all the headers and footers from my PDFs with trial and error, but that was before the Search and Replace feature was implemented. And whatever I'd learned then about regular expressions I have obviously forgotten.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

You have to use backreferences for that to work. Try searching for
Code:
(?P<markup><span class="italic">)(?P<character>[a-zA-Z])
and replacing with
Code:
\g<markup> \g<character>
(I'm using named backreferences here for the purpose of clarity.) If you want to, there's also a tutorial for regular expressions available, although it's aimed at beginners.

Thanks so much. I can usually figure it out from the tutorials and searching other posts here on the forum. But this one had me stumped.

Is there any hope for a change in this? I have secondary series info in a custom column and don't mind editing the css myself.

It's not something I am personally interested in, but perhaps one of the other calibre devs might be.
