How did you get those margin settings on the Aura H20? It looks really good.

JSWolf: A hacked Kindle screen can look like that, as I am sure you know.

Josieb1: Excellent points about risk-free buying. I've gotten most of my Kobos used, so I take what I get, and I do have some pin pricks on my Aura Screen, and even on my Aura HD. They are not noticeable at normal reading angles, but they are there. I'd like to have the Aura H2O, but only if I can get it through Best Buy or some other US retailer, or eventually, a used one. I don't want to deal with returns through Kobo. Amazon makes it so easy!

Regarding using cases: I much prefer using my Kobo Aura HD without a case. Same with my Mini. The one is so big, the other so tiny, they both feel great without cases.

rcentros: if you get a Kobo Touch, wait til you feel the back! It is so nice, you won't want to put a case on it. I wish the Mini had a back like that. (I bought a used Touch on ebay, with a mark near the margin, with an ebay GC, it cost me $12. I got it for my son, he doesn't care about the mark on the screen).

How many would like to have the Kindle with settings that give a look similar to the sample?
I actually think that looks pretty horrible, it all seems to cramped and needlessly squished together so much that I'd end up reading slower with it set like that.

It's something to do with it being an electronic item. Tbh I'm not prepared to risk it. One Kobo I took a chance on, two, that's gambling too much.

Ohh and seller never pays return postage, the buyer does.
Actually, that point about not using the item is not really true at all, you are entitled to use the product just as much as you would if you were in the shop and there are no exceptions for electronic goods, it is more things like perishable or personalised items where exceptions are allowed.

The distance selling regulations stopped earlier this year and got rolled into a more consistent overall policy called the consumer contracts regulations:

I have never used a case for my Kindles (but do have one for when I am travelling with it) and instead use a silicone grip cover. I find that far more comfortable and easy to read with, the only ereader I like using a case for is my Sony PR350 as it still feels pretty small and light in my hands. And <touch wood> so far I've yet to damage any of my 'naked' ereaders!

A very good point but one that many people choose to ignore just because they personally want more choice (even from people who don't own a Kindle and don't really have any intention of buying one).

I was told something similar by WH Smith when considering the Aura. Thanks very much to Crowl for posting that link to the latest consumer regulations, however the difference is in both cases, we weren't buying online but from a high street shop, and your rights are different.

Also, even when buying online, there is the difference of returning an ereader because you don't like the way it looks (for example, the screen looks too yellow, shadows from the lights, those scratches along the top of the Aura) as opposed to an actual defect. With Amazon you could return it and ask for a replacement and they'd do that no problem, even sending you the replacement model out before you sent the old one back. With Kobo, they might eventually do the same, but they'd be asking for photos first, and the turnaround would be a lot longer.

Because, do you really need a cover when you're holding it in your hands? So while I agree with you 100%, it seems to me that you are using a bit of fuzzy math to equate the price of the original PW and Voyage. I think it is quite clearly $80 more than the original PW no matter how you rationalize it.
I add a book style cover to make it feel more like a book instead of a device. My tablet comes in at 595 grams, and I hold that for hours, so a PW+cover is nothing compared to that. Compared to most hardbacks I still have, the PW+cover is feather light.

Yes, the price is still the $80 more no matter how you twist it. The cost to me compared to what I spend on the PWs will be only $20 more. $180 and $200 in my math is close enough - and it does have upgrades ....

Thanks for the link Crowl. I did read it all and one thing that I spotted is the 'software' once opened is often non returnable and I'm sure that's why the retailers are taking the non returnable stance with the ereaders

My thought as well. I actually don't like the way it looks at all and much prefer the settings I'm using on my kindle where there's a small margin and more line spacing. That said, I certainly DO like that you're able to adjust it. I love how easy it is to customize in general on the Kobo. The extra fonts etc. It's the one thing Kindles lack for me.

I still don't think Kobo is the right device for me though due to their customer service issues alone. I haven't heard good things and the lighted e-readers can often have screen issues. With Amazon I have a replacement in my hand often overnight. With Kobo the process sounds a lot more painful.

That's just stock firmware with margins set to their lowest and reading a epub. If you are using a kepub there is a top header with the book name. Bottom will have more or less spacing at the bottom of a given page depending on the paragraph and widows/orphans I think (this gets argued endlessly but seems to be a limitation of Adobe rendering -- not something I'm well versed on arguing).

Same here on ever point.

I absolutely love the freedom Kobo users have over how their books look, and am thinking more and more about just risking it and buying an H2O.

I do understand the point of increased support cost to Amazon if they open up their devices for font uploads, though I'd venture to say that only advanced users would even do this sort of thing.

But still. All Amazon has to do is offer a set amount of fonts (10? 20?) you can send to your kindle from the manage my devices interface. Just have checkmarks for the ones you wish to have on the device, if the number must be limited (though they could just add a scrollbar to the font selection and let people decide how many they wish to scroll through).
In terms of margins, how hard can it be to add two more settings?!

Someone had the idea for them to charge $5 per additional font. I would not pay that, simply because I get bored with using the same font over and over. At this point, I'd need a lot more fonts to keep me happy. Plus, I would really despise Amazon if they charged me for something that Kobo users get for free.

Well, at least here in Belgium /Netherlands I was able to return my H2O and ask for a replacement without any questions asked. The return is free, too: just print a shipping label and voilà... just like Amazon. Bought it at Bol.com.

Perhaps a reassurance for my fellow countrymen, if any?

Well all the people opposed to choice of a narrower margin on kindles have chosen to ignore that there are already 3 choices:

1. wide
2. too wide for most
3, way too wide for anybody

Why can't the "way too wide for anybody" be dropped and a "not so wide" be added?

The middle one and the one on the left look too cramped. I don't know if it is actually the narrow margin or that the letters are too close together. I like the one on the right because the letters are further apart, although I could certainly tolerate a narrower margin.

My thoughts as well. Why do they hold out on these simple changes that would make their reader truly great? It's confusing and frustrating. The fact that they added page buttons back says they do listen to feedback, so I guess we can only hope one day we get what we want. If Best Buy sold the Kobo I'd give it a try, but that's likely the only way.

Agreed, the last choice is laughable. Surely no one ever uses it, the margins are so wide it's ridiculous.
