I'm doing some reading. Last time 40 million credit cards were stolen, the thieves got very stiff sentences. And the businesses paid big fines and lawsuit payouts, but ultimately emerged with their businesses intact.

I did not know that Barnes and Noble was involved.

I wont step foot into a Target again. I have seen how they treat people and desperate people on Facebook who are having to cancel Christmas.

I will just say this on the matter Targets seems to be saying they are taking care of people who are caught up in this mess when that is B.S. It's the banks, Credit Unions and Credit Card Companies that are having to foot the bill and most of these fraudulent purchases are being made right in Target's stores.

Now here the kicker some people are visiting family and out of town only to find that their card no longer works They have no money to get back home and most of these don't use a national bank so they are stuck. It's a nightmare.

Target also now has their employees coming onto their Facebook page pretending to be customers and saying how much they love Target and it's not Target's fault. They are arguing with the people who have been victims to this mess. The thing about Facebook is many don't realize how you can see where they are employed several have been caught and called out already.

Can this company stoop any lower?

Oh yes I remember them as well but I've never had it happen to me except when hubby was in Korea and use his card on Base it was compromised at a merchant there but we were with a different bank then and they caught it within hours and called me. They went out of their way to make sure he had money while he was deployed. I miss that bank.

After their incident B&N removed all the customer POS terminals from their stores. You had to hand your credit card to the cashier. I believe they have an entirely new system now. Seems to be the safest route.

Just what is it that you expect Target to do? If there's some proof that they were negligent, they should be held accountable, but they can't wave a magic wand and undo the inconvenience and/or damage. Seems that the anger should be directed at the hackers!

It's how they are handling it that is causing people to be upset at them. They are downplaying it. There's no need to cancel your card they say. You wont be responsible for any charges that might happen We will take it. They are making it look like they are the ones who is handling everything when really they are doing nothing even their own Red Card holders are being constantly lied to and while I understand every support line being jammed is not something they can fix so no I don't blame them for that but they way they are handling it is just disgusting.

Oh several former employees have come out about how negligent Target is in their Security vis their WiFi network now not sure if that is true or not we wont find out till sometime next year but if they are telling the truth then Target is somewhat responsible.

You might want to read this but take it with a grain of salt.

Forgot to add they are lying about PINs not being compromised. Several people with only debits cards have lost their money and the only way to use their card is with a pin.

The rep I spoke with at Target the day after the news broke was very nice. The email I got from Target made it clear that the bank(s) or Target would take the charges not the customer. So I didn't think they were trying to take all the credit.

It's a big mess no doubt, but so far they are handling better than some of the other companies this has happened to on a smaller scale. But I can understand if you don't want to shop there anymore.

I did go to Target for the nook and got both discounts....it was $36.04 out the door with 8.1% sales tax. But it's a moot issue now.

I think this was the proverbial perfect storm. Wrong time of year with people traveling and buying gifts. And it's probably impossible to get the staff they need into their call centers and trained up to be able to appropriately help all those callers. Just horrible timing.

But their response sounds like it was 100% written up by lawyers. Technically correct, but not really what anxious people need to hear right now.

The credit card companies and banks are telling people the same thing.

My own bank is closing cards after the First of the year. At least they gave me notice so I can plan accordly.

I take that back--you are right. At my Target yesterday they had signs posted saying you could not get the 10% and 5% both. So when I checked out I asked the cashier if I would still get my 10% if I used my card (I was afraid I would only get the 5%). He thought I could get both, but when he looked at the receipt he said I only got the 10%. Which was fine with me. But looking closer, I got the 10%, then it was subtotaled and 5% was taken off that.

Yes, the timing couldn't be worse. And everyone's under extra stress at holiday time anyway. I don't know what they are supposed to tell anxious people, though--seems like they're saying don't worry, we'll take care of it, which is about all they can say. Now, if a month later it turns out they aren't taking care of it, fine, I'll jump on the anti-Target bandwagon.

Of course, I expect I might not be so forgiving if I were personally affected. I'm actually planning a trip to Target today and thinking cash-only is probably a very good idea!
