Exactly right. It's when the party is out travelling in the Tuscan countryside, and Mr Eager compels the driver to turn his pretty companion off the carriage. Mr Emerson protests:

I'm still struggling with the American one. I can think of earlier authors than Mark Twain of course, with very famous books - Herman Melville (Moby-Dick) and Nathaniel Hawthorne (The Scarlet Letter) for instance - but that satirical quote doesn't suggest them.

Where's issy when we need her? Probably too late at night for her.

Woman author? I was thinking perhaps Willa Cather, but she's too late. And clearly not Harriet Beecher Stowe. So, Louisa May Alcott? Best know title, Little Women? Although I'll be chagrined if that's the case, because I had that book dang near memorized as a girl and I really can't remember the quote.
