His potential fee could finally allow him to join the middle ranks and be worthy of long-suffering Helena Justina.

Unexpectedly confronted with the murder of a man-eating lion, Falco is distracted from his original task, uncovering a bitter rivalry between the gladiators' trainers. With one star gladiator dead, Falco is forced to investigate and the trail leads from Rome to the blood-soaked sand of the arena in North Africa.

Sleeping Murder is the last book in Agatha Christie's Miss Marple series, other than some short story compilations. It's on sale for $1.99 right now in the US.

Quote:
In Agatha Christie’s classic, Sleeping Murder, the indomitable Miss Marple turns ghost hunter and uncovers shocking evidence of a perfect crime.

Soon after Gwenda moved into her new home, odd things started to happen. Despite her best efforts to modernize the house, she only succeeded in dredging up its past. Worse, she felt an irrational sense of terror every time she climbed the stairs.

In fear, Gwenda turned to Miss Marple to exorcise her ghosts. Between them, they were to solve a “perfect” crime committed many years before.

Any yet another holiday themed mystery...

Away in a Manger is the fifteenth Molly Murphy title by Rhys Bowen. It's $2.99 right now in the US.

Spoiler:
Quote:
It's Christmastime in 1905 New York City, and for once, Molly Murphy Sullivan is looking forward to the approaching holidays. She has a family of her own now: she and Daniel have a baby son and twelve-year-old Bridie is living with them as their ward. As Molly and the children listen to carolers in the street, they hear a lovely voice, the voice of an angel, and see a beggar girl huddled in a doorway, singing "Away in a Manger." Bridie is touched by the girl's ragged clothes and wants to help her out if they can. They give her a quarter, only to watch a bigger boy take it from her. But Molly discovers the boy is the girl's older brother. They've come from England and their mother has disappeared, and they're living with an aunt who mistreats them terribly.

Molly quickly realizes that these children are not the usual city waifs. They are well-spoken and clearly used to better things. So who are they? And what's happened to their mother? As Molly looks for a way to help the children and for the answers to these questions, she gets drawn into an investigation that will take her up to the highest levels of New York society.

The Physicists' Daughter, which is the first in a new series by Mary Anna Evans, was one of my favorite mysteries of 2022. Which is a little odd since, although I like Evans' other main series a lot, I don't love it to the same extent. I am a little biased about The Physicists' Daughter because the protagonist, Justine Byrne, reminded me of my mother, who faced many of the same issues at around the same time, and because, even decades later, as a female in engineering, I also (sadly) still had to deal with many of the same issues, although to a lesser degree. And also because I tried welding, but never managed to do it very well, so I'm in awe of Justine's skill.

But I also found the mystery itself to be engaging, and I loved the author's attention to the details of the WW II time and setting. So, now that I've really talked it up , I'll add that The Physicists' Daughter is on sale in both the US ($1.99) and UK (£1.64) right now.

Spoiler:
Quote:
No one can be trusted. The fate of a country is at stake. And everything depends on the physicists' daughter.

New Orleans, 1944.

Sabotage. That's the word on factory worker Justine Byrne's mind as she is repeatedly called to weld machine parts that keep failing with no clear cause. Could someone inside the secretive Carbon Division be deliberately undermining the factory's Allied war efforts?

Raised by her late parents to think logically, she also can't help wondering just what the oddly shaped carbon gadgets she assembles day after day have to do with the boats the factory builds. When a crane inexplicably crashes to the factory floor, leaving a woman dead, Justine can no longer ignore her nagging fear that German spies are at work within the building, trying to put the factory and its workers out of commission.

Unable to trust anyone—not the charming men vying for her attention, not her unpleasant boss, and not even the women who work beside her—Justine draws on the legacy of her unconventional upbringing to keep her division running and protect her coworkers, her country, and herself from a war that is suddenly very close to home.

Oh yeah, and if you want my full review, although you got a good chunk of it already , it's on my blog...
