"Enforced"? Most e-book retailers use DRM, and you're not supposed to be able to actually own the book. It just so happens that other retailers' DRM is easier to defeat than Amazon's.

Not all of them. Apple’s ebook DRM is also difficult to remove from what I have heard.

And quite a few ePub book vendors do not use DRM. According to a talk at a convention years back, neither Baen nor Tor have seen increases in piracy of their ebooks compared to competitors that use DRM.

As for Apple's DRM at this time, their DRM is not removable though that is likely due to their relatively small share of the ebook market.

OYAH, why is it so hard to get a decent idea of what ebook market share is? Preferably one with numbers that will not cause uncontrollable laughter. For instance, I ran into one late 2024 publication which stated Amazon has 91% of the worldwide ebook market, B&N is second at 25%, Apple has 5% and Kobo has 3%. This oddly adds up to 124%. The B&N 25% is a bit strange as a share of the world wide market since B&N only sells books in the US market and the US market is a lot smaller than the rest of the world combined. Other odd statistics such as 45% of Chinese consumers read ebooks compared to 23% of USA consumers which given the Chinese population is ~4.15 times larger than the population of the USA so that would give about 635 million ebook readers in China compared to 72 million ebook readers in the USA.

635 million Chinese read ebooks and B&N has 25% of the worldwide market? I had no idea B&N was selling in China and so successfully, too.

Shocking, isn't it? Most of the ebook statistics I saw were about as useless. The numbers didn't add up in most of them and all too many seemed to make the assumption that American statistics applied to the entire world.

Download and transfer gone in the UK now. That's me done with Amazon then, time to move on, there's plenty of other options for buying stuff from other retailers. I will be looking at supporting smaller independent retailers from now on, something I was guilty of not doing because of Amazon (which makes me part of the problem!)

D&T gone for me in the UK too.

I have switched to buying from Kobo. They price-match (even Amazon one-day offers) and then give an extra 10% off, so it will be cheaper than Amazon and easier to download and remove DRM.

Thanks! Reading that thread was informative. Since it seems I'll be stuck with KFX, I might just read the one book whose release I'm waiting for on my current K4PC. My Kindle library is only 52 books in total, so it's not been an apocalyptic change for me.

Yeah, confirming that now the D&T option is gone for my 3 accounts: amazon.com, amazon.co.uk, amazon.com.br

Well, if they price match maybe I give Kobo a trial. Do I even need a Kobo reader, or can I just download and remove DRM? We're considering ditching amazon for everything, given Bezos sucking up to Voldemort (you know who)

You don't need a Kobo reader to download and deDRM Kobo books.
