All of the books I read are epubs created via Calibre and on rare occasions I have run into the beginning delays of what your describing before I rebooted to clear things up. |

Hi, I have an 289 page epub that I created from a pdf. On both my Sony and my iRex it is taking about 7 seconds to change to the next page. Based on comments in this thread I ran epubcheck. I have included the output here. I am not sure if it will help any. I have turned off my reader and restarted it and there is no difference. I have tried reconverting the file using different base fonts and a few other items. Nothing seems to make a difference. If there is anything known that I should look for in the original PDF that might cause this problem please let me know..................Jackie
Here is the epubcheck - for what it is worth. Epubcheck Version 1.0.5 ERROR: test.epub/content.opf(14): date value '2010-03-25T04:00:00+00:00' is not valid, YYYY[-MM[-DD]] expected ERROR: test.epub/index_split_000.html(16): element "img" from namespace "http:/ www.w3.org/1999/xhtml" not allowed in this context ERROR: test.epub/index_split_000.html(16): required attributes missing ERROR: test.epub/index_split_000.html(18): required attributes missing ERROR: test.epub/toc.ncx(13): unfinished element ERROR: test.epub/toc.ncx(2): assertion failed: first playOrder value is not 1 |

Well I don't know what I did but my page turning problem is fixed. I went into the pdf file and deleted the first image there, I selected no images when I recreated the epub file. I also happened to download a bunch of news items and read them. Presumably this caused some re-indexing on my iRex. By the time I got back to my book the pages where turning at normal speed. It is possible that removing the images during the conversion fixed the problem. No guarantee because I broke the primary rule of problem determination and changed multiple things at once. Oh well. My reading is much more enjoyable once again...............Jackie

Apologies beforehand if this has been discussed before: I tried to search but being a non-English speaker and a non-techie on top of that, I think I probably don't know the "proper" English terms to search with so I came up with nothing...
I recently started using Calibre (which I think is an AMAZING programme, thank you Kovidgoyal!) I have converted an .lit file to an .epub file and now there are 2 or 3 extra spaces added in the text. As far as I can tell it always occurs right after an quotation mark or an apostrophe and it looks like this: " Yes. Yes, ofcourse." She looked at the ash cane contemptuously. " Of course I' do it. I don' t want anyone else hurt." It also happens after letters like ä, ö, ë, é and è which are also letters used in the languages I read in. What can I do to remove them, or not have them find their way there at all? sincerely, Karen. PS: I use a Bebook One, in case that might be useful information in how the files are being handled by my specific type of reader. |

I've had my nook now for about 2 months, and I've been trying to get all my metadata correct. The issue I'm running into is that many books have incorrect title, or author information, or both. Or they have them correct, but the nook doesn't read them properly. I've found the nifty buttons in the metadata editing function to reverse title and author, but not all of the caliber input metadata is working correctly. Anyone know what might be happening?
Also, is there a way to get caliber to rename the files in bulk? I have a ton of project gutenberg stuff, and I'd love to have something more descriptive than pg06749 |

Converting &Margins?
I will apologize now for any "incorrect" technical terms I might use in this post. I am very new to the Calibre software and am having problems converting ebooks to fit properly on the iPad screen. So....
When I look at the book in it's original format all appears correct. When converted to pub, I get all sorts of sentences wrapping incorrectly, or beginning incorrectly. Is there a setting in the software to set margins when converting? If so, does anyone know what it is for the Ipad? Thanks for all and any help! ![]() |

Before I go further, my advice to all of the iPad owners out there is to stop the insanity! Trying to convert PDF to epub just to be able to read it in the iBooks apps is insane. The main (possibly only) advantage the iPad has as an ereader is, with the right app, the ability to read PDF in it's native format. The larger screen and the addition of color is ideal for this. Get the GoodReader App for $0.99 and move on. If you insist in attempting to convert your PDF to ePub try adjusting the line un-wrapping factor in the PDF input area of conversion. One person said they used the Illiad output profile because it is 1024x768 like the iPad.Good Luck! |

Sorry if this is already been discuss but I just have a quick question.
I converted my files to ePub, how do you change the fonts in ePubs to Verdana or DejaVu sans? When I put my ePub books in my Device (which is a Pocket Pro) the fonts is Arial. I don't know anything at all about programming. ![]() ![]() Last edited by diokdin; 04-19-2010 at 10:37 AM. Reason: add comment |

At the moment there's no easy way to specify fonts when generatng an EPUB file.

I am new to this forum, thanks to kovidgoyal for creating Calibre.
Recently I am facing a problem with my converted epubs, I usually convert my ebooks to epub through Calibre and read them in my iPod touch by Stanza. From last 3 updates of Calibre after transferring my books to ipod touch and opening through Stanza I could not see the book cover image. The cover page is always blank, whether I use my custom cover or download the cover by Calibre. I don't know if it is a problem with Calibre or with Stanza, but previously converted books do have the cover page intact. Please advice.. Sorry if this question is already answered...kindly redirect me to the answer... |

calibre now uses SVG to place covers in epub e-books. Stanza doesn't support SVG, hence the problem.

It makes the covers scale to occupy the full screen of the viewer, no matter what the viewer size is. The earlier approach, would also achieve this, but at the cost of blank space on the sides of the cover or the edges of the cover being cut off.
