Loveladies, NJ
An unicoporated community in the barrier island on the Jersey shore. It was actually named for an island in the bay that was owned by Thomas Lovelady. It's a fun name, though. It has several beautiful beaches, all open to the public and served by free parking -- but the lots fill up fast on nice days. Last edited by cromag; 07-07-2016 at 11:34 PM. |

Salzgitter, Germany
Salzgitter originated in the beginning of the 14th century around salt springs near the village Verpstedt (later Vöppstedt). The name was derived from the neighbouring village Gitter (nowadays a city borough) as "up dem solte to Gytere", which means "salt near Gitter"; the first mention was in 1347. Califon, NJ
As Wikipedia notes, "The town was to originally have been called California, but the name was shortened to Califon in order to fit on the welcome sign." However, local lore is that the person hired to paint the sign blew the money on booze and didn't have enough paint for the full name. Either way, it's Califon now. My college roommate was from a dairy farm in Califon. There are still a few dairy farms in the area, but it's too hilly for other kinds of farms. Last edited by cromag; 07-10-2016 at 01:46 AM. |

Nantes, France
The name Nantes, pronounced [nɑ̃t] in French, derives from that of its pre-Roman-era inhabitants, the Gaulish tribe known as the Namnetes, who founded a town there around 70 BC. The city was called Portus Namnetum during the Roman occupation that began in 56 BC. The inhabitants of Nantes are known in French as Nantais ([nɑ̃tɛ]). |

Sanchi, India
The Buddhist vihara at Sanchi, famous for its Great Stupa is located at Sanchi Town in Raisen District of the state of Madhya Pradesh, India, it is 46 km north-east of Bhopal. The Great Stupa at Sanchi is the oldest stone structure in India and was originally commissioned by the emperor Ashoka the Great in the 3rd century BCE. Its nucleus was a simple hemispherical brick structure built over the relics of the Buddha. It was crowned by the chatra, a parasol-like structure symbolising high rank, which was intended to honour and shelter the relics. The construction work of this stupa was overseen by Ashoka's wife, Devi herself, who was the daughter of a merchant of Vidisha. Sanchi was also her birthplace as well as the venue of her and Ashoka's wedding. In the 1st century BCE, four elaborately carved toranas (ornamental gateways) and a balustrade encircling the entire structure were added. The sanchi stupa built during Mauryan period was made of bricks. The monuments have been listed among the UNESCO World Heritage Sites since 1989. ![]() |
