One of the interest of the Onyx Boox Max is to put the reading in landscape mode and make two pages visible side-by-side, just like when you read a real book.

In OnyxNeoReader, there is an option to put the reading in landscape mode but I could not find one setting to put 2 pages side by side.

Another question : is it possible to jump to random pages with OnyxNeoReader ? When opening PDFs I just cannot find something in the menu for this.

Thanks in advance for your help.

To jump to another page in pdf click in middle of bottom of page. On bottom right you will see your page number and number of total pages. Click on this and you will get option to go to the page of your choice.

Question

I need a little help to install custom dictionaries please

I've followed instructions here: http://boox.com/index.php/en/support...o-install-dict but I may have not done it right.

Quote:
2. Unzip the dictionary and put this dictionary into SD Card's “dicts/” folder. There are 3 files (.dict.dz,.idx,.ifo ) in each dictionary folder.
Inside external SD card (like the next instruction: "insert the SD card into your device" suggests) or internal memory?
I've tried both:

1) I want to install this Englis-French Dictionary:
http://download.tuxfamily.org/polygl...tium-2.4.2.zip

2) It must be extracted inside the internal memory?
at the root, there's already a folder "dictionary": with already "stardict-oxford-2.4.2" inside.
I extract and put inside this "dictionary" folder my folder "stardict-anglais-francais_apertium-2.4.2" (with its 3 files inside ifo, idx, dz)

I can select my dictionary "anglais-francais_apertium-2.4.2" in "Settings/Language/Dictionary/Dictionary - set the dictionary".
But now, selecting any word on the page provides no result. Clicking on "Dictionary" in the bottom panel that has opened when clicking on word make it Crash!
"Unfortunately, the dictionary tool has crashed"

What's more, if I go back using again the default "oxford" dictionary, this one has become unusable: Clicking on words gives no result, clicking on Dictionary in the bottom panel makes it crash.

2) so maybe inside an external SD card?
I've put my stardict dictionary "stardict-anglais-francais_apertium-2.4.2" inside the root of my SD card, or inside a folder "dicts" that I've created (I've tried both of them).
Reboot. Check if I can select my dictionary: it doesn't appear in the list... only the default "Oxford" dictionary.

Thanks a lot!

September firmware for Onyx Boox Max?

My current firmware is dated July 2016 (1.75RC1). I have a power management issue - 2% drain per hour on standby without wifi/gps, and Android never goes into deep sleep.

Onyx had apparently released a new firmware last month which addresses power management issues:

http://120.76.193.63/index.php/en/su...for-max-v1-7-5

However, I can't download anything from that site. Anyone has any clue what is going on?

I clicked on the second link ("pcloud download"). I had to make a free account on the site, then click "save to pCloud" and after that I could download the file.

Edit: After installing, the language was changed to chinese. Luckily I managed to guess my way to the "change language" setting and change back to English. If you update, make sure you have memorized the correct path to the language menu!

Well I have been watching these threads for a while. I really want to purchase a 13.3 ebook reader. Tempted by maxboox as at least it is out there and able to be brought! I am watching the ebookreader indigo website too, but they just keep delaying!
I will mainly be using an ebook reader of this size to read my technical manuals. (Cisco study guides etc)
However I am curious to see what the users experience has been like for people who have already purchased this product.
Also I have just been trailing readly (a magazine subscription service) and I was wondering if this is able to run on the MAXBOOX? As that would be pretty cool.

I think I will make a purchase around December time. I was hoping to see reviews from the goodereader and onyboox max.

If I don't go with these what is the best 9.7 ebook reader to go for.

I am still using my IREX 800, which is years old now, this has worked ok for PDF but the screen is a little small. And zooming is quite slow, and when I do this I loose diagram details etc.

So I am still looking for 13.3, it is a shame the sony is not for sale..

thanks for reading.

Paul.

About this, the response is not simple. Not produced : for me 'yes'. Not sold : you can read this Sony DPT-1 13.3" Reader Discontinued?

I think the sony is not easily available to buy here in the UK.
So i just need to compare the boox and the goodereader for now.

I hope to see these products reviewed fully side by side.
From what i read on these forums some people are not happy with the speed etc, but all I am after is a good PDF reader. I don't need these to be like a tablet! I have those already...
So I really want to see what the user experience is with regards to speed of handling PDF.
The extras like audio might be quite nice for it to read to me, and as mentioned some app interaction like being able to use readly would be an added bonus, as I would find that a great addition.

I do like the idea of the pan and zoom using fingers as that it what we are all used to. But again its 13.3 inch screen. How much zooming will I really need to do! ;-)

Useful stuff would be able to have different pages being displayed side by side, due to a lot of tech manuals referring to diagrams. Also be nice to use this feature so that I could have questions one one page and the answers on another! This would help when marking. At least with a real book I can flip between pages like this pretty quickly.
So is this possible on the boox? Will it be possible on the good e reader?

I suppose i am just going to have to wait a bit longer... and of course these things are not cheap. i will have to bite the bullet soon.
Would be nice to be able to see this physically in action in the UK to get some hands on, and see how they respond.

@ Huiggy

Let's try to be helpful. On Onyx Boox Max you should find the folder "dictionary". You don't have to install the dictionaries on your SD card. I did install them in the internal memory. I f you want to, then create an empty "dictionary" folder first.

One important thing. There are many problems when working with the e-reader via Apple OS. The device is optimised for Windows. This might have caused you difficulties by installation.

Now, first extract your zip files on to your Windows PC/Laptop. Only after this copy the extracted entire dictionary folder in the "dictionary" folder of your Boox MAX.

Then open the the "Dictionary tool" app on your reading device and select the dictionary of choice (in Dictionary selection).

It is possible that now the app is compromised. If the procedure does not work, reset the e-reader and reinstall the latest update. Before that save on your pc or SD card any personal documents being on your Boox Max. Hope it works. Just in case this is not functioning, try to contact the German vendor, who is also a software engineer. The last possibility is that your dictionary is corrupted. I have installed long ago several dictionaries on the e-reader and they all work fine.

@Brigader

Onyx Boox Max is very good at handling PDFs. Besides, they are preparing for the end of the year a massive revamping of their apps, which will be even better. The Scribble App, meant to make notes both independently and within the PDF, becomes slow after a while if you write a lot and they want to change this with the from scratch recreated app.

Zooming - Once you cut edges for example, the text becomes larger. However the screen is so big, one really doesn't need zooming and the edges could be practical for taking notes. Pay attention, the e-reader has not a touch screen. Nonetheless, the menu has plenty of easy options for zooming and generally tackling the way you view your document.

Different pages being displayed side by side will be part of the next app changes (note that one or two updates are still probable before the big software revamp), hopefully till the end of the year as they hinted to me.

They are also working on using Boox Max as a second monitor for PC, probably via an app.

It makes no sense to go for a 9.7 inches e-reader - they're all a headache when reading pdfs, because of the constant zooming necessity and different zooming ways for so many different pdf formats.

Regarding the magazine subscription service, can you download and visualise the magazine as pdf (the simple way) or it runs via an app? In the second case, please check with the magazine's company if that app is compatible with Android 4.04, the current OS of the e-reader. Onyx promised since may this year that they would soon upgrade all their devices to Android 4.4 but for the moment there is only a beta version available, and that is NOT for Boox Max.

The vendor had to split his research resources between the necessities of the internal Chinese market and the international one. Thus the updates are now slower in pace. However big changes are coming.

Now about the shortcomings. The Boox Max is not comparable in speed and functionality with a medium to high specifications tablet or smartphone. It is slow and has no colours. The processor is 1 Ghz, i.e. there is not much space for many other apps unless you're prepared to slow down even further the device. Several of them are ok, but keep their number limited.

For the time being there are some problems with reading the DRM protected E-books (unless you remove the protection, of course) - related to the Adobe account's registration - but Booxtor transmitted this week the information to his colleagues and they should come with a solution within few weeks.

Last, but not least, the device is truly expensive, though such are the costs as well. If the sales progress well, the hardware producer (who is not Onyx, but E-Ink) will be able to cut the production costs in the second half of the next year. I have also asked about the prospects of a next generation 13.3 inch e-reader. Most important would be for me a higher resolution screen and colour. We will see maybe towards the end of 2017 a new e-reader and colour will certainly not be a feature of it.

Thanks drew 22 for your detailed reply.
I only need this for reading. So looks like it will buy soon.

As or readly. I do see the magazine publishers send them to readly as pdf. Not sure then how they are encrypted.
Many Thanks

Paul
