On the lighter side, from one of my favorite humorous books:
As we clambered in I rather received the impression that the driver said, "Right you are, Snowball," but decided I must be mistaken. |

I don't remember this line, but the only book that comes to mind with a character named Snowball is Animal Farm.

Here you go:
Knowing the sight would shock her I thought it wise to break the news to her gently. "Emily," I began, "I think you ought to know. It's very unfortunate but I have to... to wear something...." "Stop!" she cried. "I've been wondering for days how to tell you." And with a dramatic gesture she swished up her skirt. There dangling between her legs like a gourd was the twin of my ghastly appendage. |

Thanks!
![]() These are two innocents of the 1920s, so the gourd-like ghastly appendages are not what they might be in our more jaded age. Indeed, later in the book they figure out the mechanics of teh sex from a statue of Leda and the Swan. Homosexuality is also unknown to them although the title of the book might lead you to think differently (hint, hint). If no one gets it from this, it is indeed a closed book and time to move on. Where's the poohchicken when you need someone with a taste for period humor? |

The chicken seems to have missed this one! But is giggling guiltily over your clues! I have no earthly idea! [= another tome to add to my enormous TBR list!]

Our Hearts Were Young and Gay by Cornelia Otis Skinner and Emily Kimbrough. Its style may be dated, but it still makes me laugh out loud.
This is up for grabs. Who's next? |

Someone call me?
![]() OK - since I failed miserably on the last one (but enjoyed the clues immensely) (and just ordered a copy of the book): "The analytical power should not be confounded with simple ingenuity; for while the analyst is necessarily ingenious, the ingenious man is often remarkably incapable of analysis." "It was a freak of fancy in my friend (for what else shall I call it?) to be enamored of the night for her own sake; and into this bizarrerie, as into all his others, I quietly fell; giving myself up to his wild whims with a perfect abandon." |

It sounds familiar. I'm guessing that it was written in the 1800s based on the language. But, who? I think I'll need another clue.

Okie-dokie:
"What he stated was, in substance, this. He had lately made a voyage to the Indian Archipelago. A party, of which he formed one, landed at Borneo, and passed into the interior on an excursion of pleasure." |

And:
"This is beyond my comprehension. I do not hesitate to say that I am amazed, and can scarcely credit my senses. How was it possible you should know I was thinking of -- -- ?" Here I paused, to ascertain beyond a doubt whether he really knew of whom I thought." |
