I don't remember this line, but the only book that comes to mind with a character named Snowball is Animal Farm.

Nice guess. The character referenced, however, isn't really named Snowball; she's addressed as such because of her attire.

These are two innocents of the 1920s, so the gourd-like ghastly appendages are not what they might be in our more jaded age. Indeed, later in the book they figure out the mechanics of teh sex from a statue of Leda and the Swan. Homosexuality is also unknown to them although the title of the book might lead you to think differently (hint, hint).

If no one gets it from this, it is indeed a closed book and time to move on. Where's the poohchicken when you need someone with a taste for period humor?

Our Hearts Were Young and Gay by Cornelia Otis Skinner and Emily Kimbrough. Its style may be dated, but it still makes me laugh out loud.

OK - since I failed miserably on the last one (but enjoyed the clues immensely) (and just ordered a copy of the book):

It sounds familiar. I'm guessing that it was written in the 1800s based on the language. But, who? I think I'll need another clue.
