This latest version did successfuly import the collections on my kindle into my custom column in Calibre. Now all the books on the kindle that were in a collection have an entry in the column. All the books in Calibre that were not on the kindle or were not in a collection have no entry in the column.
So how do I use this going forward? For a book not on the kindle, if I type a collection name into the custom column and send the book to the kindle, will it go in that collection, even to the point of creating a collection if it is a new collection? What if a change a collection name in the custom column? Will that put the book in a new collection? If I want to use the custom column alone, which while less automated, seems to a simpler way to go, do I go into customize and have every other entry blank except for the custom collection? |

I just did a preview of creating collections only from the custom column and here are the results:
Spoiler:
Those last five collections that don't begin with the ". " have no corresponding entries in the custom column in Calibre. I don't know where they came from. Also, there are no custom column entries for ". Clarke", ". Castle", ". Koontz", ". Crichton", and ". Alten". Hmmm. I believe those are all related to the five collections that don't begin with the ". ". For some reason, the plug-in is splitting up a collection name like ". Alten, Steve" and creating ".Alten" and "Steve" collections in addition to the existing ". Alten, Steve" collection. That my theory, anyway. |

Re: import collections from Kindle into custom columns - this works fine for me with 1.5.3 into an empty column, but I am experiencing the same thing as Nyn: if the column has data in it already, running Import simply clears the column; it does not replace the column data with the Kindle collection data (even if I run Import repeatedly). In order to populate the column with the Kindle collection data I have to restart Calibre and run Import again. (Windows XP, 7.55, K3).
Jangell: The fact that you import into a column doesn't mean the plugin knows you want to use that column to control collections going forward - you still have to set up the plugin. If you do want to use your custom column to control your collections, yes, go in to customize and make sure every entry is blank except the custom column. Then when you want to add a book to the Kindle, type the collection name into the custom column and send the book to the Kindle. If you want to change the collection for a book already on the Kindle, or if you have a book on the Kindle that wasn't in a collection and you want to add it to one, just change the name that's in the custom column (no need to send anything). Yes, you can create new collections this way. Once you make any changes to the custom column, remember to disconnect the Kindle and reboot it (menu, settings, menu, restart) so the changes show up on your Kindle! |

I'll need to write up something about Import Collections about using it to control your collections. Its a nice way to see what you have on your Kindle, but it can also be used along with Create Collections, and I can see its confusing what you should do. Basically once you import, treat it like any other custom column and as jesscat said, if you want to auto-create collections on the Kindle using the values in the column, setup Customize to put 'Create' as the action for that custom column and leave the others blank. Then update your column manually whenever you want, and run Create Collections. |

Now I've got another problem. I just did a Create Collections and rebooted the Kindle and the one new collection I created is there. There is no book in it and all of my collections have zero books in them. Do I have to send the books when I create collections? When I did the Create Collections, I didn't send any books, I assumed all the books on the Kindle would be put into their collections. |

I have no idea what the problem was before; I was testing under 7.55 before- don't know if that makes a difference. But I'm not able to reproduce it now! |
