So it is late in the evening for me to manage to think up something clever. So here is a numbers exercise to keep everyone interested busy until tomorrow. It is a game one of my high school mathematics teachers used to set up for extra credit. I believe someone used something similar a while back.
Start with the following set of natural numbers {1,3,5,7}. Use these numbers (all must be used for each answer and each number may be used once and only once) to form the natural numbers starting at 1 and up from there; 1,2,3, . . .. The following operations are all allowed, addition(+), subtraction (-), multiplication (*), division (/), powers (a^b), roots (a√b), and factorial (!)*, and as many () groupings as you wish. There is no rounding or truncation allowed. One point earned for each number produced. The numbers must be produced in order, no skipping ahead, and will continue until a dead end is reached. *for those unfamiliar n! = 1*2*3* . . . *n. 0! = 1, 1! = 1, 2! = 2, 3! = 6, and so on. To start things off 1 = ((5+3)-7)*1 Sorry Stichawl ![]() |

2 = (7+3)/5*1 ???
If I understand the Q ![]() 3 = (7+5)/(3+1) ??? 4 = (7+5)/(3*1) ??? 5 = (7+3-5)*1 ??? 6 = (7+5)/(3-1) ??? 7 = 3*5-1-7 ??? 8 = (5+7)-(3+1) 9 = (5+7)-(3*1) 10 = (5+7)-(3-1) Last edited by SneakySnake; 04-04-2012 at 10:35 PM. Reason: I keep adding answers! |

11 = ((5!)/(7+3))-1
12 = (5!)/((7+3)^1) 13 = ((5!)/(7+3))+1 14 = 7-1+3+5 15 = 1*3+5+7 16 = 1+3+5+7 17 = 3*7+1-5 18 = (3!)+7+5^1 19 = (3!)+7+5+1 20 = 3*7-1^5 Last edited by Daithi; 04-05-2012 at 12:18 AM. Reason: not sure order of operations on factorials so I added parenthesis to play it safe |
