You were both on treadmills with her treadmill running faster than yours, by the amount to produce the different distance?

Yeah I recall that lawsuit and it was about all I recalled about golf. I thought maybe the lawsuit resulted in requiring that the disabled golfer be able to use a cart, and so to be fair the PGA allowed everyone that option.

I believe in 1982 they got to use their own caddies. Before 1982 they had to use the club's caddies -- who were all black.

When I was there the Golf Club hadn't had any black members, but they do now. They still have never had a female member.

I also got to watch a Klan rally while I lived there, and far more people showed up to protest and boo the handful of shmucks who were marching.
Ah memories. I was working at a place in Aiken, SC and lived in North Augusta from 1978 – 1981. I had no interest in golf so never paid any attention to the Golf Club or the tournament. I do recall several Klan rallies being publicized while I was there, but you are correct that it usually amounted to not much more than a handful of people in funny outfits and hats chanting about white rights. Or at least that is all I recall seeing from news reports. Not that racial prejudice had disappeared by any means, it was just more subtle.

Absolutely right. I heard this one on Car Talk a few years ago, and thought it was pretty good one. Take it away Hamlet.

So it is late in the evening for me to manage to think up something clever. So here is a numbers exercise to keep everyone interested busy until tomorrow. It is a game one of my high school mathematics teachers used to set up for extra credit. I believe someone used something similar a while back.

Start with the following set of natural numbers {1,3,5,7}. Use these numbers (all must be used for each answer and each number may be used once and only once) to form the natural numbers starting at 1 and up from there; 1,2,3, . . .. The following operations are all allowed, addition(+), subtraction (-), multiplication (*), division (/), powers (a^b), roots (a√b), and factorial (!)*, and as many () groupings as you wish. There is no rounding or truncation allowed. One point earned for each number produced. The numbers must be produced in order, no skipping ahead, and will continue until a dead end is reached.

*for those unfamiliar n! = 1*2*3* . . . *n. 0! = 1, 1! = 1, 2! = 2, 3! = 6, and so on.

To start things off 1 = ((5+3)-7)*1

Sorry Stichawl

2 = (7+3)/5*1 ???

If I understand the Q

3 = (7+5)/(3+1) ???
4 = (7+5)/(3*1) ???
5 = (7+3-5)*1 ???
6 = (7+5)/(3-1) ???
7 = 3*5-1-7 ???
8 = (5+7)-(3+1)
9 = (5+7)-(3*1)
10 = (5+7)-(3-1)

11 = ((5!)/(7+3))-1
12 = (5!)/((7+3)^1)
13 = ((5!)/(7+3))+1
14 = 7-1+3+5
15 = 1*3+5+7
16 = 1+3+5+7
17 = 3*7+1-5
18 = (3!)+7+5^1
19 = (3!)+7+5+1
20 = 3*7-1^5

Last edited by Daithi; 04-05-2012 at 12:18 AM. Reason: not sure order of operations on factorials so I added parenthesis to play it safe

I got about three sentences into the directions and was totally lost...
I've been trying to work backwards from the answers given to try to figure out what the question actually is, but I'm stuck on the little stars and the exclamation points. I can deal with the '+' and ' - ' signs.
