There was a big earthquake just off New Zealand (7.9). Just watching the Tsunami warning advisory for half the east coast of Oz (doesn't include me, but does a brother and mother). Should be an update at 10:25pm our time (i.e. now):

If you go to the "New South Wales" bit, it's just "keep away from the water" at the moment. It's all unlikely, but, of course, I gotta watch.

Excellent National Tsunami warning system...an update expected at 10:25pm...taps foot, looks at watch, 20 minutes later...

Hey, finally an update at the above link.

Not much changed. Of course, it's a form advisory, but marginal amusement provided by "people are advised to get out of the water" - anyone in the water is likely more worried about hypothermia at the moment.

Apparently "Tsunami has been observed at Spring Bay in TAS at 10:05pm and at Port Kembla at 10:06pm". Probably small (heard a twitter of 20cm, but what's a twitter-mention worth?), and no news being reported.

does 20cm count as a tsunami ? don't you have bigger waves than that when the water is dead calm ?

Tsunami's strength includes wavelength as well as amplitude:

It's a large body of water being shifted, compared to, let's say, a surface wind-wave. So, let's say the waves that come in are 2m, well, that water stays at that height for a long time and keeps coming. 2m normal waves are relatively common here, but a 2m tsunami would likely inundate Hastings Street (behind Main Beach).

Saying all this, yes, it's looking small (but impressive, considering the distance it has travelled, and the speed it did it in).
