yes, and the out-date nature relative to modern communications.

The site owner(s) are located in Switzerland -

Question Modified 3.3 files what's next?
I've followed instruction

I'm sure most of you know this already, but I just decided to update my Kindle DX from 3.2.1 to 3.3. If you're running that package found on bay of pirates, all you have to do is download the 3.3 update for any Kindle 3. I'm using the Kindle 3 Wifi+3G update, so the filenames may differ. Use Kindle_update_tool.py to extract Update_kindle_3.3_B006.bin and decompress it. You'll now find "Update_525120101-611680021.bin". Use the update tool to extract that and decompress it. Now you'll have a bunch of files. Go into the "06" folder and find "update-06-576290015-611680021.bin". Open that in a hex editor and go to offset 0xC. Change it to 0x02 for K2, 0x03 for K2i, 0x04 for DX, 0x05 for DXi, and 0x09 for DXG. Now copy that update to your Kindle and run it. You might get an error and it's ok because some of the modem files may be different, but your Kindle will be updated regardless. Someone can make a "premade" package of 3.3 updates, but I don't have the time.
and have managed to extract file from 3.3 bin and have edit update-06-576290015-611680021.bin file. What next should I do to update my DX 2.5.8 to 3.3? I've tried just put update-06-576290015-611680021.bin on it and update but it failed and doesn't update device.

Yifan seems not likely to be active here anymore, so if Amazon is not issuing you certificate after doing above mentioned stuff, you can ask me, I found the solution.

Ok here I come again... I have successfully done all this on my Kindle Keyboard which was already on v3.4.2. What this means is:

1. I won't have to go through all the "updates-in-installments" that are explained in this thread. So in 1 shot, I'll get Kindle DXG up and running on v3.4.2.

2. The reason I didn't want to install v3.4.2 on my big-boy was that there was no guarantee that one can revert back to trusty 2.5.8. With this, IF YIFANLU is right about reverting back from 3.2.1 -> 2.5.8 then it'd be true with reverting from this 3.4.2 -> 2.5.8 too!

I am attaching the bin file for step 2 I created.

How to use:
Add the following to the whitelist (<k3 root>/linkjail/etc/whitelist) of the jailbreak on the k3 host:

update_k3g-3.4.2-create_updater

Use the attached "create_updater" file.

NiLuJe, there was a lipc commnad to initiate updating from /mnt/us/update_blah.bin (without going to Menu>Setting>Update... Do you know what it was?

Definitely not looking for: lipc-set-prop com.lab126.ota startUpdate 1

Can someone who has done it before confirm this for me: In the created file "update_k3g-3.4.2-update-os.bin" which is created... what is the content of yours?

You can do this and tell me the contents (I'm in Windoze now):

kindletool.exe extract update_k3g-3.4.2-update-os.bin

@idoit: the exact lipc call is in KUAL's helper extension. Might be FW 5.x only, though.

And... I'm running both 2.5.8 and 3.4.2 now.

For people who care about the underhood, I don't recommend 3.* on DX(G), neither Yifan's nor newman's and nor mine. There are just so many things unhandled (on a perfection level). Again, on the surface it all might look everything is going fine, but in the background, it's not streamlined.

That's why for people who care about little details, I'd say stay at the official firmware. Not that the above 3 methods are not cool but not perfect.

3.4.2 on mine does lots of unnecessary indexing!!!!

Next, I'm planning to resolve the issue of TTS and powerd.

Please note that if you follow my method of getting 3.4.2 straight from 2.5.8 (without going through hassle of 2.5.8 -> 3.2.1 -> 3.3 -> 3.4 -> 3.4.2), the power switch doesn't work (yet!), so when it goes to sleep, I need to issue:
lipc-set-prop com.lab126.powerd wakeUp 1

I'll resolve it soon.

That's the kernel (potentially because of a funky early NOHZ support), happens on vanilla devices too.

And also most likely the cause of the funky audio problems on the K3.

If someone here intends to re-build that kernel, they really should find and backport the fix for the "HZ problem" on ARM.

The Linux-2.6 repo at this site would be a good place to start looking (or bi-secting):

And it's no surprise that (compared to its official firmware), this one eats battery at a bit faster rate.

I'm pretty positive that even 128MB of RAM is quite fine if we manage to tailor v3.* to not give out errors and warnings in log.
