I've downloaded The Disappearing Spoon from the library to read on an upcoming trip. Meanwhile, I'm working on The Disappointment Artist, essays by Jonathan Lethem.

Sigh!!

I wish my local library had e.books. It doesn't. In fact, it seems very few libraries here in Australia have gone down that route yet, perhaps because there aren't many e.readers yet on our market. Yeah, you can buy a Kindle, and now a Kobo, but none of the Sonys, and licensing deals for e.books in the OZ market have a fair way yet to go to match North America or Europe.

My local head librarian quite bluntly told me to go away and stop asking, because e.books aren't something she's interested in considering.

Bummer.

I thoroughly enjoyed The Disappearing Spoon - my only quibble was that it focused almost exclusively on the "modern" additions to the Periodic Table - the radioactive elements, those created in the bubble chamber, etc. - with not much on the discovery of the earlier ones.

I'm more worried about me!! () And the other library-users who might want this service.

I suspect it is a money issue, but in the context of official priorities on how public money is spent. The area I live in is attracting great numbers of migrants - according to local council reports, English speakers are close to being in the minority now - and so most of the expenditure for new acquisitions is going on publications in languages other than English.

It's a difficult situation, and one it's hard to even ask pragmatic questions about without risking being labelled as "racist".

I'm looking forward to "Spoon" quite a bit!

I've also downloaded Leonard Maltin's 151 Best Movies You've Never Seen - I'm about 1/4 of the way through; so far, there's one I have actually seen, but ideas for several future rentals!

I really can't wait for the 650 to hit my local Sony store as the frustration of not having library Epubs and PDFs at the same time on my 505 is driving me bonkers (also, it appears the 650 will handle PDF books better).

"English speakers are close to being in the minority now - and so most of the expenditure for new acquisitions is going on publications in languages other than English."

My library has a fair amount of ebooks in Chinese.

I'm reading yet another mystery penned by Georgette Heyer -- Why Shoot A Butler? These are delightful froths filled with witty dialogue that just tickles me. Does anyone write anymore like this:

"Surely you remember old Mr. Fountain? Though why you should I can't imagine, for he went nowhere. He's dead.
Is that why he went nowhere? inquired Frank.
Not at all, dear. How should I know his movements now? How long has Jasper Fountain been dead?"

I find repartee like this howlingly funny! It's like setting a murder mystery at Totleigh Towers while Bertie Wooster was visiting.

Thanks! Wow, she wrote a lot of books. And most of them seem to be $7.99 at Amazon--that's a price a miser frugal person like me can almost live with.

I interviewed with the Smalltalk group while I was there. At the time, I really didn't get what they were telling me about.

I ended up at Apple too, working for Mark Gealy. He was the Clearinghouse guy at PARC, and went to Apple to do distributed systems. That was about 1988. Unfortunately, those were kind of dark days at Apple. John Sculley was the CEO. A lot of the fun was gone. I only stayed about 18 months.

Anyway, to get back to the thread topic I just started The Pigtailed Heart. The preface was kind of a turn-off for me because if was a little too graphic for my taste, then the first chapter or two started off kinda slow, but I'm glad I stuck with it, because now it looks like it might live up to my expectations based on the blurb and reviews. In other words, another "Chinatown".
