I remember reading The Taking of Pelham One Two Three, by John Godey, back when I was probably barely old enough to be reading thrillers, but I liked it. I have no idea whether my adult self would like it, nor whether it will have managed to withstand the test of time, but I may find out , since it has dropped to $1.99 at Kindle US right now.

Quote:
A New York subway train is taken hostage in this “high-voltage thriller with the kick of a third rail” (The Washington Post).

A New York Times Bestseller

After a New York City train leaves the Pelham station at 1:23 p.m., four armed men take control of it—along with seventeen passengers. Their demands are simple: deliver one million dollars, or the hostages will be killed one by one. Fast-paced and intensely psychological, this novel tells the story from the point of view of each of the hijackers—revealing each man’s motivations, desperations, and fatal flaws.

The basis of a blockbuster 1974 movie that was remade in 2009 with Denzel Washington and John Travolta, this classic modern thriller will have you on the edge of your seat, and holding on tight.

“Entertaining . . . Clever in its details, frequently quite funny, and witty in its comments on how New York City functions . . . [A] slam-bang ending.” —The New York Times

“A wild ride.” —The Pittsburgh Press

“Harrowing, terrifying, and so, so good.” —BusinessWeek

I've not read the book, but the 1970's film is EXCELLENT! (And available on Prime Video.) I haven't seen either of the two remakes, so not sure how they hold up.

Women Crime Writers: Four Suspense Novels of the 1950s (LOA #269): Mischief / The Blunderer / Beast in View / Fools' Gold (Library of America Women Crime Writers Collection Book 2)
- $1.99 at Amazon US

Quote:
The Real Lolita author Sarah Wienman presents a landmark collection of 4 brilliant novels by the female pioneers of crime fiction—women who paved the way for Gillian Flynn, Tana French, and Lisa Scottoline

Though women crime and suspense writers dominate today’s bestseller lists, the extraordinary work of the mid-century pioneers of the genre is largely unknown. Turning in many cases from the mean streets of the hardboiled school to explore the anxieties and terrors lurking in everyday life, these groundbreaking novelists found the roots of fear and violence in a quiet suburban neighborhood, on a college campus, or in a comfortable midtown hotel. Their work, influential in its day and still vibrant and extraordinarily riveting today, is long overdue for rediscovery.

This volume, the second of a two-volume collector’s set, gathers four classic works that together reveal the vital and unacknowledged lineage to today’s leading crime writers. From the 1950s here are Charlotte Armstrong’s Mischief, the nightmarish drama of a child entrusted to a psychotic babysitter, Patricia Highsmith’s The Blunderer, brilliantly tracking the perverse parallel lives of two men driven toward murder, Margaret Millar’s Beast in View, a relentless study in madness, and Dolores Hitchens’s Fools' Gold, a hard-edged tale of robbery and redemption.

I had an ARC of Joe Ide's The Goodbye Coast a while back. It's meant to be a re-imagined modern version of Chandler's Marlowe stories, and although I thought it might have been better not trying quite so hard to be a Marlowe reincarnation, and I thought it was a bit too long, it still somehow kept me reading. It's on sale in both the US ($2.99) and the UK (£0.99) right now.

Kindle US: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B096RS2G58
Kobo US: https://www.kobo.com/us/en/ebook/the-goodbye-coast
Kindle UK: https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B09BQNLTSJ

Spoiler:
Quote:
In this colorful reinvention of a classic, Philip Marlowe finds himself tangled in two missing persons cases; “Ide has chiseled off the rust while keeping the soul of one of American fiction’s icons.” (Dennis Lehane)

The seductive and relentless figure of Raymond Chandler’s detective, Philip Marlowe, is vividly re-imagined in present-day Los Angeles. Here is a city of scheming Malibu actresses, ruthless gang members, virulent inequality, and washed-out police. Acclaimed and award-winning novelist Joe Ide imagines a Marlowe very much of our time: he’s a quiet, lonely, and remarkably capable and confident private detective, though he lives beneath the shadow of his father, a once-decorated LAPD homicide detective, famous throughout the city, who’s given in to drink after the death of Marlowe’s mother.

Marlowe, against his better judgement, accepts two missing person cases, the first a daughter of a faded, tyrannical Hollywood starlet, and the second, a British child stolen from his mother by his father. At the center of The Goodbye Coast is Marlowe’s troubled and confounding relationship with his father, a son who despises yet respects his dad, and a dad who’s unable to hide his bitter disappointment with his grown boy.

Steeped in the richly detailed ethnic neighborhoods of modern LA, Ide’s The Goodbye Coast is a bold recreation that is viciously funny, ingeniously plotted, and surprisingly tender.

The 19th-century Egyptologist must rescue her kidnapped husband, find the culprit, and save her marriage in this delightful seventh adventure for beloved heroine Amelia Peabody.

With Nefret, now a ward of Amelia and Emerson, and Ramses at home pursuing their studies, the couple returns to Amarna in 1898 for a dig that promises to be just like old times. The trip turns out to be more like old times than they plan, however, when they become the targets of a Master Criminal's evil plot. Emerson is kidnapped, and Amelia rescues him to discover that he has lost his memory. Tantalizingly close to her most important discovery yet, a tomb that may have been Nefertiti's, Amelia needs to turn her attention to regaining her husband's love.

Fire and Ice by JA Jance features both Joanna Brady (14th book) and JP Beaumont (19th book). It's £1.99 at Kindle UK right now. Jance's books don't go on sale all that often, so grab it now if you want it!

Spoiler:
Quote:
New York Times bestselling author J.A. Jance brings her two best-loved series characters together as Beaumont and Brady investigate a pair of cases that cross state lines

Seattle investigator J.P. Beaumont is working a series of murders in which six young women have been wrapped in tarps, doused with gasoline and set on fire. Their charred remains have been scattered around various dump sites, creating a grisly pattern of death across western Washington.

At the same time, thousands of miles away in the Arizona desert, Cochise County sheriff Joanna Brady is looking into a homicide in which the elderly caretaker of an ATV park was run over and left to die. All the man has left behind is his dog, who is the improbable witness to some kind of turf warfare – or something more sinister.

But, here, as the threads of their two seemingly seperate cases wind together, Beaumont and Brady must put aside echoes of their shared past as they are once again drawn into an orbit of deception. Except this time it’s not just their own lives that are in danger but those of the people closest to them as well.

What the Devil Knows is the most recent (2021) in CS Harris' Sebastian St. Cyr series. It has dropped to $1.99/£0.99 in the US/UK right now.

Kindle US: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08CSZ4ZFM/

Spoiler:
Quote:
Sebastian St. Cyr thought a notorious killer had been brought to justice until a shocking series of gruesome new murders stuns the city in this thrilling historical mystery from the USA Today bestselling author of Who Speaks for the Damned.

It's October 1814. The war with France is finally over and Europe's diplomats are convening in Vienna for a conference that will put their world back together. With peace finally at hand, London suddenly finds itself in the grip of a series of heinous murders eerily similar to the Ratcliffe Highway murders of three years before.

In 1811, two entire families were viciously murdered in their homes. A suspect--a young seaman named John Williams--was arrested. But before he could be brought to trial, Williams hanged himself in his cell. The murders ceased, and London slowly began to breathe easier. But when the lead investigator, Sir Edwin Pym, is killed in the same brutal way three years later and others possibly connected to the original case meet violent ends, the city is paralyzed with terror once more.

Was the wrong man arrested for the murders? Bow Street magistrate Sir Henry Lovejoy turns to his friend Sebastian St. Cyr, Viscount Devlin, for assistance. Pym's colleagues are convinced his manner of death is a coincidence, but Sebastian has his doubts. The more he looks into the three-year-old murders, the more certain he becomes that the hapless John Williams was not the real killer. Which begs the question--who was and why are they dead set on killing again?

Two years and some months later, these three books are on sale again in the US and UK, but this time the prices mostly aren't quite as good - $3.99 in the US and £1.99 in the UK. So hopefully you already got them if you want them ...

The links are all still good.
