Flanders & Swann — "The Armadillo". Sadly no YouTube version!

I was taking compass bearings for the Ordinance Survey
On an army training camp on Salisbury plain,
I had packed up my theodolite, was calling it a day,
When I heard a voice that sang a sad refrain:

'Oh, my darling Armadillo,
Let me tell you of my love,
Listen to my Armadillo roundelay;
Be my fellow on my pillow,
Underneath this weeping willow,
Be my darling Armadillo all the day.'

I was somewhat disconcerted by this curious affair,
For a single Armadillo, you will own,
On Salisbury plain, on summer, is comparatively rare,
And a pair of them is practically unknown.

Drawn by that mellow solo,
There I followed on my bike,
To discover what these Armadillo
Lovers would be like:

'Oh, my darling Armadillo,
How delightful it would be,
If for us those silver wedding bells would chime,
Let the orange blossoms billow,
You need only say 'I will'-oh,
Be my darling Armadillo all the time.'

Then I saw them in a hollow, by a yellow muddy bank -
An Armadillo singing ... to an armour-plated tank.
Should I tell him, gaunt and rusting, with the willow tree above,
This - abandoned on manoeuvres - is the object of your love?

I left him to his singing,
Cycled home without a pause,
Never tell a man the truth
About the one that he adores.

On the breeze that follows sunset,
I could hear that sad refrain,
Singing willow, willow, willow down the way;
And I seemed to hear it still, Oh,
Vive L'amore, vive l'Armadillo,
'Be my darling Armadillo all the day.

Be my darling Armadillo all the day.'

But it's so hard to see these things, when they're reduced to avatar size! I couldn't tell what you were either, Kenny.

And KindleKitten -- the blown up version STILL looks like blood all over your Kindle!

it's just the skin. it is actually fairly tasteful IRL.

yeah, the avys can be VERY hard to see. many other boards make it possible to see them larger when you click on them, here you just go to the user profile

she is indeed the mighty huntress! I spared y'all from her conquests when I was in CA. it was always a mystery as to what present I would be coming home to there! she hasn't really been hunting here... I guess the PAC NW critters are too waterlogged for her palate.

she's never gone after e-devices... I suppose if I ever got truly desperate though, we could have a twist on Oliver Twist, and I could put my little kitten burglar to work?

Yesterday, I was so absorbed in my reading that I missed my stop on my commuter train. I had to call my wife to drive up and pick me up, a half-hour out of her way.

I blame myself for my own inattentiveness, of course. However, I keep thinking about the fact that I ride that train every day, with at least a dozen other people who see me every day (including the conductor, who sat right in front of me yesterday). Yet, when we got to the stop I always get off on, did anyone notice that I was still sitting there, and tap my shoulder, or say, "Hey, dude, we're in Germantown... aren't you getting off?"

Nope.

Even the conductor, who got back onto the train after my stop, didn't notice me right there behind his seat.

Some days, I feel truly invisible in this society. When I walk down the streets of the city I grew up in, and have worked in over twenty-five of the last thirty years, I feel completely anonymous... and I watch the things anonymous people do around (and, more importantly, to) each other, every day.

And suddenly I can understand, completely and without reservation, why some people go postal...

Yeah, I know. 'Cause I missed my stop. It really is that simple.
