Maybe try the stand alone DRM removal tools?

Sure they do. Perhaps you should rollback to a version of calibre compatible with Windows 7?

Are you allowed to post a link to that? I wasn't aware that a non-Calibre option even existed.

I did get DeDRM to work under Windows 7, but I had to use DeDRM 6.8.1 in order for it to work in Calibre 3.4.8.

I don't think DRM has really changed much, has it? If you download whatever version of Calibre runs on Windows 7 and the version of deDRM that works with it and K4PC 1.17 or older (or the other book downloading programs from Kobo, Adobe, etc.), won't everything still work?

Yes, I was able to decrypt an ADE EPUB on Windows 7. The only difference is that the decrypted e-book has the files stored in a different order compared to what you get when you decrypt using Calibre 6. The extracted contents of the ZIP archives are identical, but the ZIP files themselves are not. I don't know if that's the result of the different Calibre or the different DeDRM versions (or a combination of both).

The storage order of the files in an epub+zip archive is irrelevant (the only exception being the mimetype file, which must be first).

Sorry, I don't have a link. I used to use a stand alone version, but many moons ago I switched to just importing into Calibre.

DeDRM 6.8.1 seems quite old, I'm guessing the stand alone tools are included in it.

I know that there is no functional difference; I'm just curious as to the cause. I would expect the decrypted EPUBs to be identical, regardless of the Calibre version. Since the files differ, that would suggest that Calibre is building a new EPUB after the decryption, rather than giving you the decrypted original file.

The DeDRM ZIP contains many Python scripts, but none of them appears to be used for decryption without Calibre.

Tor eBooks are DRM free. Star Trek eBooks are DRM free.''

Is your computer able to run Windows 10? If so, you can upgrade to Windows 10, Calibre 6, and DeDRM 10.0.3 all for free.

I will have dual boot windows 7 and windows 10 once my upgrade arrives. I'm using Calibre 4.23 under win 7. Then I'll see if win 7 calibre and win 10 latest calibre can read the same files. I'll search for DeDRM 6.8.1. Now I'm going to bed.

You keep writing this opinion as fact. But Microsoft admits not all Win7 are entitled to free Win10 upgrade. Also some HW isn't suitable at all or poor.

Calibre itself is doing nothing to the epub after decryption. The 3rd-party On-Import DeDRM plugin does all of the modification. But it uses calibre's python and python modules to do so. So different Python versions and different python zip module versions between calibre versions are the more likely culprits. But as already stated, the storage order is of absolutely no consequence.

It's been a while since I checked, but you could still easily update Win 7 computers to 10 well beyond the 'free period' to do so. I did it with several old PCs.
