I'm here at my desk, eavesdropping across the cubes. The people on my side are getting set up for this week's wedding shower, and the groom-to-be is sitting on the other side pretending he can't hear it. Can a girl claim all of these wedding/baby shower gifts as a tax deduction? This is getting ridiculous. OK, slap on a happy face and go pretend to be excited to watch other people get gifts.

No .... I don't think it's my BP because I'm dizzy no matter what I am doing ... just sitting, standing, or lying down. It's just all sort of space cadetish.

I got so tired of everyone else's wedding and baby showers. Especially those who are on their fifth or sixth husband and/or child.

I think those of us withered old maids should be entitled to have at least one shower for no particular reason ... just because it would be nice to get some prezzies.

I would really like to have a nail gun (just one for small finish nails/brads), and some more ebooks, and maybe a pony???

I'm trying to figure out how the hell a resident of Alaska and a resident of Texas who are dealing with a slander that occurred in Illinois wind up in court in the Netherlands.

It was posed in another thread .... and I for the life of me cannot see how that would happen.

They do it all with mirrors and guy-wires, and there's a trapdoor on the stage, and there's actually two residents, and three Netherlands, so you only think that you're looking at the same one, and that's not a real sword.

I am currently killing time while our new balcony shutters continue being put up. It looks like it's going to be a dull day (though a very pleasant, sunny and humid one - the dry is over and everything's going growing-crazy).

Having murdered my table saw today, I am trying to decide if I should venture out into the mosquito plagued evening to set up the new one, or if I should just wait until tomorrow.

Hmmmm .... West Nile Virus ... or wait until tomorrow. Decisions, decisions.

Well .... I am sad to say that I brutally killed it by doing something utterly stupid with it .... knowing the whole time that I was doing it that it was utterly stupid, and would in all likelihood kill my table saw. Which it did.

I was trying to do a miter rip through a cedar four by four post. Probably would have been better done with a band saw ... but I don't have a band saw, and I may actually kill my brand new table saw trying to do this same cut tomorrow. Or .... maybe not. Could be I'll get away with it this time.

It's still up in the air about just how dense I can be before I admit defeat. I WILL get this project built!!! Dammit ... I WILL!!!

That's not stupid (and even if it was, I'm not qualified to second your opinion ). I know what stupidity-with-saws is though. My late mother-out-law's idiot neighbour tried to prune his large cherry tree, from a 6' step ladder on uneven ground (and by "ground" I mean "sloping lawn"), with a circular saw.

There was a lot of blood, but they managed to save his thumb, with only some permanently reduced mobility and numbness.

Eh .... I've already managed to have my thumb on my right hand ripped off ... so, I can say with authority that there is a lot of blood when that happens. They managed to reattach my thumb as well, they said I would have reduced mobility and numbness ... they were wrong on that count, although my grip is maybe a little weaker in my right hand as a result.

And ... what your late mother in law's idiot neighbor did was seriously stupid. I will admit that my action with respect to my table saw was not quite on that level of stupidity, it was still pretty damn stupid.

Although ... I do now have a nice base for my miter saw. So, I guess it's an ill wind .... and all that stuff.

Even a pinky lets out a lot of blood. I lost two finger tips (about a half inch off the two left middle fingers) to a jointer and it hurts like hell and you loose more than you think. If you loose a thumb it is considered a loss of 60% of your dexterity. In the process it cut my musical career completely.

Think of building a jig for whatever you need to do.

But, it was already done. The thumb was ripped off and reattached years ago. Although my boyfriend really mangled his trying to drill into some metal a few years ago, and he lost quite a bit of feeling and dexterity ... which made it miserably hard for him to play the guitar.

But ... mine healed up pretty well, all things considered. And, right now, I'm going to head back out there and finish the project. I bought the new saw, and got it set up, and finished cutting most all of the wood. I just have to finish the trim and then paint it. Which needs to be done by Tuesday.

So .... off and running ....

As a result of a hit-and-run accident (I was walking when hit) while I was in high school I had a broken beer bottle piece driven into my left wrist that did a number on the left hand. (I have never been able to play guitar as well since. Can't mash down the strings too well.) Day-to-day you could not tell that I had the accident.

Yvan is the expert on woodworking (I have seen the box he made for Bob Russell and it is stunning in its excellent craftmanship) but I would take the cuts on the cedar in stages rather thn all at once. My Grandfather taught me woodworking when I was younger. My Father (his son-in-law) wanted nothing to do with tools or woodworking so my Grandfather felt it was his responsibility to train me before too much of my Father rubbed off on me.

Good luck on the project Ricky.

Well, I decided that it was my own stupidity in using a panel saw blade. I was just too lazy to change it.

All the cedar cuts are now done. The box is all put together, all screws nicely set in and covered, everything also glued, and the whole thing bound up in rope while it dries.

Tonight I will sand and prime, and then tomorrow I'll paint.

My "expertise" in woodworking is decidedly limited. I can do most furniture repairs, and have built some serviceable pieces, but I don't think I would term any of my work as "art."

My upbringing was a little ummmm .... different. My father left when I was about two, and my mother and sister were very much alike ... I was simply not traveling the same road as they.

So, when my sister wanted something, my mother could understand why she wanted it, and generally got it for her. If I wanted something, my mother really could not see why I would want such a thing, so she'd buy me the tools to make it and tell me to get to work.

When my mom remarried, I was already 15 and pretty well versed in most tool use, and my stepfather (who was a systems analyst) enjoyed doing woodwork (his son is now a excellent carpenter) started showing me a few of the finer points of the craft. However, I only had two years with him before I moved away from home.

The upshot is that I am comfortable around a woodshop, I can also sew and do upholstery, bake and cook (not fond of cooking, however), build a computer, write very (very) basic programs, perform damn good autopsies, paint and draw a little, know more than just the basics of triage and diagnosis, repair small appliances, and have a law degree. You know ... your average jack of all trades.
