Books loaded using the Volumes app are stored locally on that device and no where else, hence the reason why deleting the app also deletes your only copy of the book. That's very lame. If you want this book on multiple devices, you'll need to download it directly to each device. That also means there's no syncing between devices.

Bottom line: consider it a one-time loan. Then you won't care about losing the book if you delete the app.

OK, I'll pass. I can get this from at least one of my libraries anyway, so I have zero interest in loading YAA that has no other function and won't be used again.

So far, I have the app on two devices and each device has a different book.

I have to say, I didn't realize just how bad the Volumes app is. Shame on PRH for crippling the app. I certainly wouldn't pay real money for downloading any books to it.

Why DO they do this [expletive]? I might be willing to use their app, but not if it has all these flaws. And never if I can't liberate books with some reasonable solution. Those days are gone!

Because the average customer does not understand the danger of DRM. All of the major publishers have their own reading / sales app (I believe), and they all are walled gardens. I don't know if anyone other than PRH has an audio version. Sad, considering they are willing to sell their stuff through plenty of non-DRM sites. I'd be more than happy to buy from them (when the price was right) if they would just let me download my stuff.

To get this offer, "new members" must sign up between 25 and 27 Nov. How Audible defines "new members" is a mystery , so give it a shot if you're interested and have had an Audible membership in the past. It never hurts to try.

I tried signing up for this today, but was charged full price. I contacted Audible via chat and asked why and was told the deal is only for new members. I hadn't had a membership for a while but they do seem to be tightening up their definition of "new members". Then the agent told me that I did qualifiy for a discounted Gold Membership for 3 months at $7.95. Close enough for government work, I took that.

So even if you can't get this deal, it might be worth the hassle of signing up and then contacting Audible like I did if you get charged full price, maybe they'll offer you the $7.95 deal instead.

Mini Rant

I'm really getting tired of Amazon/Audible touting promos for new members as general promos and burying the new member restriction in the fine print. Unless the promo is available to all members, it's not a legitimate sale. So quit advertising it as such!

Yeah, seems like the era of great Audible deals is well and truly gone. Used to be able to cancel a 3 month free voucher deal and sign up for a $0.99/month deal the same day! Ahhhh, those were the days.

We kept Audible's membership numbers up for years in exchange for deeply discounted audiobooks, but they don't need us anymore now that they are wildly successful.
