You're quite probably right BUT those devices do have some good going for them - they are helping some youngsters engage with learning who might otherwise have fared less well. One of the areas the company I work for is involved in mobile learning (not in delivering it to the children, but to the teachers, researching the technology etc).

Don't get me wrong, I love the leapster learning systems that are out there. Ryleigh had one, although, she's out grown it. It was a great way for her to learn while having fun. We've looked at the older aged Digi game but thought we would hold off getting it for her a little longer. It's the games like Pokemon, Kirby, etc. that she likes to play on her brother's old DS that drive me crazy. It's all she can talk about. I've had to seriously limit her time on them. She has trouble focusing at school and is easily distracted so the last thing she needs is picachu messing with her head!

I'm not talking about the educational games, although they are good. I'm talking about using things like the DS, the PSP, the ipod etc as methods of engaging older students (and by older I'm talk 16+, so a little older than Ryleigh I suspect ). It was something I was sceptical about when I first heard of it, but talking to colleagues who are actually involved in it - it really does seem to be making a positive difference to some young people's lives.

But I'd far sooner children were reading or mucking about outside than playing handheld games all day!

Right now, I'm trying my darndest to get my butt off the computer! We were supposed to go to the pool, but turns out my son didn't turn on the dryer. So, since we share laundry facilities, it's either take the wet clothes up, or not go yet. So now I'll wait a few hours until both loads are dry, take the kids to hula and then to the pool for an evening swim. So that means I'm being super lazy. So I'm going to try now to get my bottom off this chair, leave the computer (esp since I notice *way* too many posts have me as the last poster) and GOOOOO

1.....2....

Currently rejoicing that I've got a night off and that the night is so warm and close that I might be anywhere else but England -- eyes closed this might be the Bahamas, the rains have just stopped, the night seems to have a slow steady heartbeat like the pounding of a drum...the drum...the drums.... a scream! The scream of a woman woken during a Voodoo wedding---

BRB, must...write....story....

Writing a story - After the Rains

The rains came. The steady drumbeat upon the hard stone courtyard, slapping the tin roof like the graceful drummers hands as they moved across congo skins. The heartbeat of music within that rain, music that travelled, seismic, to cause earthquakes in stomachs and bring down the solid cities of her mind.

Sadly, there are not so many ebooks available for young readers yet. You might have to scan some of your collection. (I keep meaning to scan my Rumer Godden books.)

Still, plenty of kids are learning to read while playing with these games, too, and you can pick games that involve more reading (roleplaying games, for example). Or see what she thinks of Brain Age. Or install one of the DS ebook readers and slip a few choice books in there.

I'm melting! Melting!

If anyone mentions the wicked witch of the west, I will make them wear patent red leather high heel shoes whilst climbing a mountain during the middle of the day, thereby returning to the real world....

I've thought about doing that, especially with the Encyclopedia Brown series which my older kids read so many times that the pages are coming out. If I don't get a teaching position for this coming school year, I have been thinking of learning to use the Book Designer software to help make some ebooks. As far as I'm concerned, I can never have enough hobbies!

Another thought: try her on "interactive fiction" stories (again, these can be played on the DS with a bit of tweaking). Starcrossed and Suspended were my favorites of the old Infocom line, and there are still new ones being written every year.

She might also like the "Choose your own adventure" books, which are similar in concept.

I thought the patent red leather high heels sounded rather cool...... But not the mountain part. I don't do mountains.
