The only ones that don't support folders that I know of, are the Amazon, B&N, and Sony devices. All the others do.

Sony have a "tagging" system they call "collections", which are a single-level "pseudo-folder" kind of thing. Real folders are much better.

Kindle has collections too (still rolling this version out).

But would I go out for a new reader now, I'd probably choose iRex 800 over iRex iLiad:
- iLiad is even more expensive, although "2 years more mature".
- iRex 800 has way better battery life.
- I tend to go for the new gadgets.
- iRex 800 does B&Ns PDB. For me that's great, so it does all the nook - formats.
- Firmware of iRex iLiad isn't supported anymore. You'll never see (DRMed) ePUB support for example.
- iRex 800 is extremely compact, although it's got the same screen size.

But you can't go wrong with either iRex unit, features are amongst the most advanced in the market.
wow, I'd like to thank you - you seem the resident expert on these devices - and ask for your opinion!
I lived happily with the Sony 505 - the best I used so far.
But I'd like to read PDFs - I've got a lot of them, and I have to read scientific papers in PDF too - so I was getting ready for a larger device.
What I need - if possible - if something not so huge that I cannot take easily with me, and without keyboard (Kindle dismissed!).

So, what would you do in my shoes? The Irex 800sg, the Irex 1000, or wait with some other soon-to-be-released?

thanks for any help!

I have nothing to compare it to, but I do love my Jetbook Lite.

I got it because:
  1. it takes 4x AA batteries, and lasts for approx. 24 hours of on-time, which translates to weeks, just like the Kindle.
  2. the screen isn't e-ink at all, just a non-backlit LCD; faster refresh rate, [supposedly] better contrast ratio than e-ink, & cheaper cost because of it.
  3. the button layout is extraordinary; easy button for manual screen rotation, 0-9 keypad for super quick folder/book selection (feels like you've got a touchscreen), and 3 different page up/down switches, plus the menu function key which leads you to the dictionary, translator, font sizes, etcetera.
  4. displays just about any ebook format without a hitch, and even displays PDFs great in landscape mode!!
  5. and the best part is that you can get one for $100 every once in awhile. this allows you to save more money for the next generation of eReaders, or my personal favorite.... the newly announced Eee Tablet.

I picked up my Jetbook Lite for $115 after bing cashback. And just a sidenote... I really regret not buying a case for it, because I have this tiny scratch on the screen that is extremely irritating.

I really wish the OP of this thread would pick one up and compare to the e-ink screens. There's no reason at all that anyone should consider another eReader over the Jetbook Lite.... well, at least not a good reason.

I'm not sure why anybody after a PDF reader would look anywhere else. This thing is pocketable, trims off the whitespace around the sides/top/bottom of PDFs, and auto-zooms into the width after trimming that whitespace... so that the PDFs look brilliant when in landscape mode. BRILLIANT!!!

Why spend more than $100 on an eBook reader?

I certainly disagree with that. There is no 1 reader that is right for all people and all use cases.

I have to confess that the Jetbook Lite is looking better and better to me as well. It seems to have the best foreign language support of any reader on the market (unicode support with Russian/Polish/Chinese/Vietnamese/Arabic etc.), replaceable AA batteries mean no charging problems plus the guys at Ectaco said they are currently working on ADE support. That means you will soon be able to use the Jetbook Lite to check out books from your local library - no need to buy stuff at Amazon or Borders. It doesn't do WiFi, it doesn't have 3G and it won't play audio files - but if you just want to read something, in whatever language you choose, it does look like a pretty compelling unit.

I certainly thank you for the suggestion - my fault if I didnt specify that e-ink was mandatory among the requirements...
You see, I owned my share of not-e-ink devices in the past - starting with a wonderful Rocket Ebook - so I know for sure what happens when using them outdoors, under the sun!

thanks again...

The Jetbook is a reflective LCD, not a backlit one, and works very well in full daylight.

Personally I'd recommend taking a look at the BeBook Neo, aka Onyx Boox 60. It is, in my view, the best 6" reader currently available. Not the cheapest, certainly, but you get what you pay for.

You should take a look at this video... and see what a *non*-backlit, reflective LCD is all about. It's used especially under the sun.

Skip to about 2:30 in this video...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lZQm9xWQJCU

There's a review of a guy on YouTube who had about 8 or 9 eReaders, and the Jetbook was his 2nd favorite, after the Clie, which is a backlit LCD (mainly because he liked some of the Sony's features)... but he wasn't even fond of the E-Ink devices, because they all lack a ton of features, take longer to refresh, and have that annoying black flash! Look no further than the Kindle, Nook, etc.

Anyway... if you guys couldn't tell by my suggestion and the video... the OP of this thread needs to add it to his collection, and eventually this massive review. It'll his $99 again... happens every couple weeks or so.

kindle DX vs DR800

as I was about to buy the DR800 came the disaster to Irex - so at the moment I'm a bit confused.

Yesterday for the 1st time did take a look at the DX - which I do not love - and saw people rather satisfied with its PDF capabilities (apart from links etc).
Yet I saw mentioned that sometimes PDFs are not easy to read at 100% and they have to zoom to read confortably.

But - if the DX at 9.7'' sometimes has problems, how can the 8'' DR800 be considered ok for PDF reading???

somebody can clarify this to me?

thank you...

On iRex 800 (with the actual firmware update) you "intelligently" can zoom in via touchscreen.
For example, you can mark the area of interest with your stylus (i.e. circle around it) and explode it to full screen.
Via touchscreen is way more comfortable and faster, plus you've got way more options.
And of course you always can reflow the text.

just buy a dr800 if you are still able to find one, bigger pdf can be read in landscape mode+zoom+continuous mode+fullscreen mode enabled
I can read that way even a4 pdf with no problem and comfortably..

Hi mgmueller,

It's been some time since you have it, so I'm being extremely anxious to know how you'd grade and rate and rank Ipad.

Just be careful there, as one of the most authoritative public source on e-readers around, your opinion may be a swing vote and a tipping point for the destinies of sonies, amazons, apples, nooks and other garden varieties around there.
