I haven't read all 61 pages of this thread, so maybe you've heard this a lot already:
I *love* the new formatting of the NY Time Headlines feed on my Kindle 2. I hadn't decided whether or not I was going to keep my Kindle. This update swings it into the "yes" column. Thanks a ton! I'll be donating $ to the Calibre cause.

Concurrent conversion jobs

Hello Kovid, is there a way to limit the number of calibre-parallel.exe's in Windows? Running 2 of these processes at the same time is killing my Windows environment (both tasks are consuming 50% CPU time of my dual CPU and the fan starts making overtime). If possible, I'd like to run just one conversion, leaving some breath for my laptop...;-)

Thx

Not at the moment, but I can certainly add a config option for it. You really should upgrade to an OS that supports proper task scheduling though

Hi,

I'm having a problem getting Stanza on my iPhone to see calibre. It worked on 0.5.14 by adding http://host:8080/stanza. But with b15, I can't get it to work.

It says on the content server config page that Stanza should see calibre "automatically", but I don't know what that means (where does it show up?). I've tried going to Stanza's Shared Books, but that just spins looking for computers. I've also tried adding both http://host:8080 and http://host:8080/stanza as a catalog, but they both give me a "catalog error". The url is correct because I can go to it in MobileSafari.

Am I missing something, or is this a bug in 0.6.0?

Thanks.

Slective save creates an unsuable structure

If I want to save to disk all the books but only a single format (like ePub), the output structure is completely different (all saved files into a single directory, which is unusable for me) then when I save all to disk (directory per author (preferred way)). Would be nice if in the Save instruction (directory per author) would be an option to select the format ..or "ALL".

Thx

Update: For the time being I have resolved it by saving all authors/books to disk but from there selectively copy files/formats to the SD card.

@cloggy: That is a feature (typically people want to save a single format when transferring to an unsupported device or SD card)

@ronin712: In a terminal run calibre-server --devlop and then try to connect to the server using stanza and post any output you see in the terminal

When I run that command, I get lines like the following (after a few Python deprecation warnings):
[20/Jul/2009:21:37:35] ENGINE Bus STARTING
[20/Jul/2009:21:37:35] ENGINE Started monitor thread '_TimeoutMonitor'.
[20/Jul/2009:21:37:35] ENGINE Started monitor thread 'Autoreloader'.
[20/Jul/2009:21:37:35] ENGINE Serving on 0.0.0.0:8080
[20/Jul/2009:21:37:35] ENGINE Bus STARTED
After playing with it a while, I can get it to works sometimes, usually right after starting Stanza. If I go back and forth between catalogs, eventually it stops working, and usually (but not always) restarting Stanza fixes it. I'd be ready to just point the finger at Stanza, but the calibre catalog is the only one that stops working. All the other catalogs, both the default ones and a non-calibre one I added, continue to work even once calibre catalog stops responding.

When I go to a "Stanza-type" catalog pointing to http://host:8080/stanza, and it works, I get log lines like the following. If it doesn't work, nothing at all is logged, and Stanza just sits there with a "Loading..." status. If I go to a "Web page" catalog pointing to http://host:8080, I get the same behavior (with different resources being requested when it works, of course).
10.0.0.113 - - [20/Jul/2009:21:38:03] "GET /stanza HTTP/1.1" 200 2480 "" "Stanza/1.9 iPhone OS/3.0/iPhone catalog/1.9"
10.0.0.113 - - [20/Jul/2009:21:38:03] "GET /get/thumb/2 HTTP/1.1" 200 1351 "" "Stanza/1.9 iPhone OS/3.0/iPhone catalog/1.9"
I just saw in another thread that you added support for Bonjour. Does this mean I should be able to see calibre in "Shared Books" like I can with Stanza Desktop? Is this what the Content Server config pages means when it says that Stanza should see calibre automatically?

Also, the Content Server config pages says I can go to http://host:8080 (no /stanza). This is confusing because Stanza has two different types of catalog, "Stanza" and "Web page". It probably needs to be clearer about how to create the catalog in Stanza, and what it means when it says that Stanza should see calibre automatically.

I opened the new ticket. http://calibre.kovidgoyal.net/ticket/2884
It's funny that hannah's error is like mine and I also have a large db.

I had a question about speeding up the adding of books. I assume that much of the slowdown comes from calibre trying to read the metadata written in the pdf etc. files. However, since my files are named by ISBN there is no reason for calibre to read the metadata since it can get it later using the ISBN.
So I was wondering if it would be possible to add a functionality where you can turn off calibre's reading of the metadata from the files when adding and perhaps it'll speed it up?

Thanks for the updates,
M

@ronin: Yes calibre now has a bonjour service, so Stanza should pick up the calibre server automatically. Feel free to suggest alternative language for the content server page. If when it fails you are getting no lines in the log, that means the requests are never reaching the server. All the other catalogs are presumably not on your local net, so whatever instability is causing it to malfunction on the local net wont affect the other catalogs.

@myle: You can disable metadata reading by going to preferences->plugins

Thanks Kovid for the fixes! now everything is much better!

I still have a problem with collections: When i transfer my library to my 505 (387 books+12news, 36 collections in total) most collections transfer fine, books inside them are ok, except for a few, almost always comics (large lrf) collections. Those collections either have many books missing, and there is always one that shows up as blank.

when transfering, i get this error:

@kemi: Use ebook-convert

@cartman: Hmm. I'm going to just say the code works "well enough" I lack the time to perfect it.
