A variation on this question, the answer is probably already posted and I'm just not putting the correct search terms together. I thought the answer might be in tweaks but I couldn't find anything that seemed to indicate how metadata for the cover page was chosen.

When creating a metadata page to insert at the beginning of a book, how do I get contents of a custom column or "custom metadata" to appear? What currently appears in the output is title, series, author & publisher (date), rating, tags then comments.

Thanks.

TXT output encoding

Thank you! Now, instead of two ??, there is only one! If I have to live with that it is, by far, much easier reading. Now, any tweeking you can suggest to get rid of the one question mark?

Sorry, I meant to include the following with my last message.

Encoding input?
In Calibre, I converted pdf or epub to txt. On ebw1150, all looks good except for:

apostrophes are replaced with ?? Is there a simple code to input in the Options, 'character encoding' to fix this? I know Calibre does not directly support .imp output, but it works very nicely converting to .txt > then use ebookwise servers to download.

Calibre is one of the best conversion programs I have seen. Very nice!

what you're looking for is output encoding not input encoding. set the output encoding to cp1252 in the txt output options

Sync Calibre with PRS-505?

Does Calibre have a sync option with the prs-505? I've loaded 1200+ books through calibre and figured out how to get them set up in series etc... but now I'm noticing that I can add covers through the metadata. Is there a way to sync them, so I don't have to delete them from my device and then reload them?? I've looked all over these forums and can't seem to find the answer. Thanks

I have a question related to inserting the metdata at the beginning of the book on conversion. I have this habit of forgetting if I've done the conversion with metadata insertion turned on. If I happen to run the conversion twice on the same book, does the metadata get inserted twice?

Automatic Updates for Calibre?

Hi, I couldn't find an answer to this in the forum.

Is there a way to make Calibre update automatically on a Windows system?

It seems like every time i open it, i'm prompted to download the update and re-install, and that erases all my settings.
Thanks, USC

No, if the metadata is different the current page will be replaced with a new page. You only run into double metadata pages if the first was placed in a book by a version of calibre earlier then 0.6.50.

No, there is no way to auto-update.

However downloading and installing updates should never lose your settings so there is something else at work on your system - I cannot think off-hand what it might be.

You do not have to uninstall the current version, just (unless directed otherwise) install the update over top of the current version. I have applied each update this way for the last 2 years and my settings have never been erased. Occasionally a setting will revert back to default due to an update but that is very rare.

It depends on the format you convert to, e.g.: if it's epub, the metadata jacket won't be duplicated but if it's mobi, it will.

You wouldn't want calibre to automatically update. Every so often, a version comes out with a bug or two in it. Besides, it's not necessary to update every time. If you check the changelog before updating, you can check to see if the update has changes that are beneficial to you.

Personally, I just ignore the notifications and check at my leisure to see if an update is beneficial to me. Of so, I wait a few days to make sure nobody reports any bugs before downloading and installing.

If you want to turn off the notifications, go into Preferences and, under Behavior, uncheck Show Notification When New Version is Available.

And mobi is what I convert to. Is the date of conversion recorded somewhere? Can I manually remove the duplicates? Hmmm, I guess I could delete the mobi and reconvert.

When my NookColor is connect to my PC, Calibre shows a column "On Device". This is not exactly what is on my device because I have deleted some ebooks from my device. It does show which ebooks that Calibre has added to my device. Is there some way to make this column permanent (even when my device is not connected to my PC) so that I will be able to see which ebooks have been transfered & which have not?
