For any database, the care and feeding of the metadata is essential to being able to look up what you want. I try to keep up as I add books, but periodically I update in mass when I come up with need search needs.

For example, for Corfu (wonderful island btw, spent 4 weeks on it one summer vacationing in Europe on "$5/day) -- I would list in the metadata "Corfu, fiction, island, Europe, travel, Mediterranean", etc. The more the *accurate* metadata, the easier to find what you want.

Hmmm . . . . I don't see why it wouldn't work on hardbacks, too. If you still have the dustjacket (I always keep mine) for a book, you will have an ISBN barcode that you can scan, right? A large percentage of the dead-tree books that I own are older and were pre-owned (sounds better than "used," doesn't it?), and the dustjackets have been long gone. However, many of those are new enough to have ISBN's (ISBN10's), and they were printed on the inside when the books were published; it looks like there would be a way to key in those numbers, in lieu of scanning barcodes.

The more difficult situation would be older books which were published before the use of ISBN numbers. However--and I may be wrong here--I think that some official organization has gone back and assigned ISBN numbers to some of them. If that's so, it should be possible to look up the ISBN numbers somewhere.

Would you explain what Corfu is? I Googled it, but all that I saw was stuff about the Greek island by that name.

Forget the last paragraph of my previous post--LJJohnson cleared it up.

BTW--I don't think that I've been to Corfu, but I've visited several Greek islands. There are bazillions of them. Highly recommend them. Santorini is probably the prettiest one (you see it in advertisements and commercials all of the time mainly because of the pretty, bright white houses and other buildings).

I haven't tried that one. LibraryThing had the ability to scan in ISBN (using the old CAT readers that were mailed out free, ages ago, but which you can still buy). I haven't played with updating there, though, in ages. I may have to go see if they've added an app, instead.

I vastly preferred LT's website and book search capabilities. Mostly now, though, I use Calibre (but, that means hand typing in any audiobooks or paper books, to keep track of them).

I have seen Library of Congress catalog data on book copyright pages which was similar "fiction, travel, romance, Corfu"

Try Title=This Rough Magic Author=Mary Stewart (or any other).

Linking to a LoC or British Library Catalog entry would work but usually not enough detail.

You might still be able to automate since the running head usually has both title and author which can then be OCR'd and looked up.

A Really Out of the Ordinary Book! Reviewers Give It Super-High Ratings, Too. $1.99.

I'm putting this on the Cookbooks thread, instead of the Non-Fiction thread, because there are Bulgarian recipes (I just love ethnic food!) at the end of the book. I didn't want people who follow this thread, but not the Non-Fiction thread, to miss the book.

Light Love Rituals: Bulgarian Myths, Legends, and Folklore. By Ronesa Aveela. Rated 5.0 stars, from 22 reviews at the present moment, at Amazon; rated 4.83, but from only 6 reviews, at GoodReads. Print list price $29.99; digital list price $3.99; Kindle price now $1.99. Bendideia Publishing, publishers. 158 pages. http://www.amazon.com/Light-Love-Rit...C+and+Folklore.

Book Description
• Discover Ancient Bulgarian Myths, Legends, Folklore, and Mythology
• Meet Heroes from Greek Mythology with Thracian Origins
• Enjoy Diverse, Delicious Modern and Traditional Bulgarian Recipes

A book for children and adults from 8 to 108 who would like to take a journey and discover Bulgarian folk tales, legends, and mythology. Whether you want to learn a little about their ancient Thracian origins, or you want to experience rituals practiced throughout the year with a fictitious Bulgarian family, or even if you’re only interested in traditional Bulgarian cuisine, this book has something for everyone.

Bulgarian culture is rich in folklore and traditions surviving since the days of the ancient Thracians. As pagan and Christian religions collided, many celebrations merged into one.“Light Love Rituals” will take you on a journey to discover these unique festivals.

• Illuminated by the light of the full moon, a woman in a long, white robe holds an icon while she dances in a trance over burning coals. The mystical music of a shepherd’s pipe plays in the background.

• Women dressed in colorful outfits dance in a circle, then pass through an enormous wreath made of magical healing herbs.

• Wild spring flowers decorate the hair of young girls. Laden with baskets filled with colorful Easter eggs, the youths travel from house to house singing to bring health and prosperity to the village.

• Men clothed like wild animals with colorful, scary masks parade around a village. Attached around their waists, giant cow bells resound announcing their arrival. The men jump and yell to scare away evil spirits.

"Light Love Rituals," not only describes the rituals, but also makes them interesting and understandable to people of all ages. The book is divided into four seasons, beginning with winter. It includes activities where you can learn how to make martenitsi, survachka, and Easter eggs dyed with natural colors. A short quiz after each season lets you test your knowledge of what you’ve read. To help you engage in the traditions in the book, you’ll meet Maria and her family. They’ll open the doors of their home so you can participate in these celebrations along with them. For an added taste of Bulgaria, try some of the traditional recipes at the end.
