Oh, good idea. I've got several translators on my phone, but for some reason, it never occurred to me to buy a Spanish/English dictionary for my K. I think I'll do that ( and it doesn't count against my book budget since its a "reference" book and I don't count those )

See here in the U.S. it is use like in a what we call a cat call. Like say a pretty woman was walking down the street. The guy would use that word to let her know he think she is hot. At least this is what I have read about mamacita. It is use as slang and not in a personal way. I read to use it in personal way was an insult due to the nature of it being used in the context of say here where I live a guy would say to a woman walking down the street. "Hey Pretty mama where are you goin'?" Some Spanish speaking people here used Mamacita like that.

Now KA used Mamita in a personal way in RC7. Hector calls the heroine that like a nickname.

Like I said it can be kind of confusing if the author doesn't explain how she sees the use of that word.

I don't either. Here a link to them.

I bought these for my Paperwhite:
  • Merriam-Webster's Spanish-English
  • Merriam-Webster's French-English
  • Merriam-Webster's Italian-English
  • Merriam-Webster's German-English

I love we can have multiple dictionaries now and not just one!

I read it. I loved it as well. The thing is, my girl friend read it too and didn't understand that Jennifer made the hero basically have a form of autism. I got it strickly for that reason as I have 2 nephews with autism. My friend re-read it then and said it made more sense to her then.

And that's an insult? Those aren't Spanish standards (as from Spain, I don't know in other countries). A cat call like that is quuuuuite tame, I can tell you

People here get offended so easy. Some woman find the word babe or being called names like that a insult. I call women ma'am or men Sir and have been told not to around here. It's the military wife in me. Why do people get offended for politeness and respect I have no idea. We are a weird bunch.

I live in the south. Here guys and girls use endearments to strangers like sugar, hon, honey darlin', my dear, sweetheart....you name it. I'm guilty of using the word hon myself and have to omit it when typing.

Well I live in the south and I don't know if I could talk with out using sweetie, darling etc...
If someone does not like it then sorry, just part of how I was raised. I blame it on being countrified. People laugh at me because of the way I talk with my accent but after being around me for a few hours most realize that is just how I am.

Keep in mind it's different when it comes from a stranger and when it comes from a lover. My husband has nicknames for me that make me go all mushy affectionate on him, but if a stranger ever dared to call me that exact same thing, his face would be bruised and his teeth rattle for at least a week. I imagine "mamacita" can work the same way.

Spoiler:
Boobsy. Sexy-butt. Wench. Babezilla. And these are the mild ones... but from him, they are endearments synonymous with "I love you", for reasons that should be obvious to any woman who has ever been given weird nicknames by her lover.

I don't think it's that. I picked up on the Aspergers/autism from quite early on. I can't quite put my finger on why I'm not connecting with it. Maybe the writing style?? But I've read some of her Captain Lacey mysteries and liked them well enough. Maybe I'm just in the wrong frame of mind and should just put it aside for another time. I tend to be a mood reader and maybe I'm just in the wrong mood for it right now.

See I have no problem with it being I married a southerner. I'm from the midwest where some not all wouldn't know how to handle it. I am also a former USAF wife so I am use to saying ma'am or sir to a stranger. Around here unless I am talking to say a police officer or judge..etc it gets a negative reaction. Now if I went home people would probably make fun of the way I talk now. You just can't live in the south for 10+ years and not pick up on their speech.

I wish I had been born southern thus my love for all things western.

I am the same way. If I am not in the mood for a certain type of story I've learned to walk away and find something else.

Okay mine just calls me Babe or Baby. I am cool with that. I don't have a problem with a strange guy using a endearment but I know some women do. However the words you mention would make me look at the guy like are you on something? Yeah I can see mamacita probably does work that way.

Wow what a interesting conversation this has turn into. And no the Paperwhite only comes with dictionaries not translation dictionaries. It has however a Translate feature using Bing to translate but you need WiFi on to use it.

The first time he called me one of those (actually not one of those, but this is supposed to be a family-friendly forum... ) that was my reaction. Death-glare, followed by, "What did you call me?!?"

He looked so very startled and nervous I immediately realized I had somehow overreacted, and then he confirmed it with, "Something I would never ever call anyone else, because they're not you."

And that was how the game of Inventing Outrageous Nicknames for Each Other was started.

Ah, that makes way more sense. I misunderstood you and thought it didnt' have any dictionaries at all. My mistake.
