I just finished dismantling, upgrading, and then putting my neighbor's Dell laptop back together. Man, that was an interesting experience. I'm used to working on Toshiba laptops (love them .... just love them), but on those you simply pop open some hatch covers and pop in the new RAM or hard drive. No big deal.

Well, with this Dell, the hard drive was simple to do, but the RAM?? OMG!! You put one stick of RAM in through the bottom, but to put in the other stick, you actually have to remove the keyboard!! Not my idea of great design, but hey.

The thing that took the most time was reinstalling Windows (XP) and the software my neighbor had the disks for. The only problem was that she didn't bother to keep bits of information such as license/registration numbers. That made for an interesting time. I did manage to get it all installed and properly organized, however.

The upside is that she has been having trouble with her laptop keyboard, and now I can install a replacement for her in about 5 minutes flat (and told her that a new keyboard would only cost about $50 at most).

So, that's two upgrades down and four to go!!! Although, I decided against putting Windows 7 on any but one or two of my own machines. I found out yesterday that Canon won't be producing any printer drivers for 7 until well after Windows 7 has gone on the market. Some of the newer printer's Vista drivers work fine with 7, but most of the legacy printers (and by legacy I mean maybe 5 years old at most) do run on Vista, but do not run on Windows 7. And, naturally, all of my neighbors have older printers (and even one of my most used printers is a legacy piece, so I'm going to have to keep at least one laptop in XP to act as a printer server for that machine.

And now that I'm finished with that, I'm going to take a good book and go to bed. Nite all!!

I'm supposed to be working on a research paper that is overdue for my master's class. This is the last class before I graduate and I'm burned out and am having trouble getting it done.

You have my sincere condolences. In two years, I will be watching my husband do the exact same thing. And he'll probably be feeling the exact same way.

Just thinking about getting ready for going out tonight with a load of people from a place I used to work at about 8 years ago. I worked there for about 11 years and made some really good friends.

Unfortunately, reason for the night out is that they have all just been given notice and will all be out of a job very soon. It's always good to see them all but not necessarily under those circumstances!

On top of it all, some of them have already asked me if I have any jobs going. Unfortunately, I'm having to lay people off as well at the moment so I can't help them.

Hopefully, it'll be a good night out, but tinged with sadness and guilt!

arg... brain is fried from looking at this project too long... i'm pretty sure i'm just going around in circles now. time to take a break. i really wish clients would be more explicit / less figurative when they give feedback. what does "volume" mean when you're talking about a font ???

Smiling while I'm repeating to myself, over and over again, that tomorrow is my last day at the grocery FOREVER! I am exiting a world of hypochrisy and lies with my head up high, and looking forward to something better (even if I have no idea of what I'll do next!)

It's still bittersweet: the fish merchant brought me to tears when he came to say goodbye today... I like some people too much for my own good, and I just know I'll cry again tomorrow when I say goodbye to the boys.

You can always drop by to see the people you do like and, when you have found something better, rub the fact in to the people you don't!

Yeah, but it's never the same! And I just know I'll never (or almost) go back, it's just not something I can do. I always feel it tarnishes the memories.
I am girly AND stubborn! (for some reason, I'm expecting "someone" to add plenty to this comment if "someone" sees it )
