Nope! Much more mundane.... I'll give the answer just to help move things along;
they change every 30 minutes. How about Issybird or Daithi (whoever sees it first) giving us a new question. Stitchawl |

All right, here's one.
Back when I was married, my wife and I took a trip from the U.S. to Okinawa where her ancestors are from. The plane was actually pretty small and there were only about a dozen other passengers on board. Over the coarse of about 12 hours of flying we both noticed that not one other person on the flight was speaking English. It appeared we were the only ones who spoke English. Eventually we landed, and one of her cousins was supposed to have met us at the airport, but she didn't show up. We then tried to make arrangements to get a hotel, but we quickly discovered that we couldn't find anyone who spoke English. Neither of us spoke Japanese (she was born in the U.S. and her parents only spoke English in the household). So anyway, after about an hour of trying to find someone who could speak English, my wife sees a woman that neither of us knew walking across the airport and my wife says, "Thank God, someone who speaks English." How did my know-it-all wife know that this lady would speak English? BTW, the lady was not a relative. |

Well, you are correct in that it wasn't by the woman's looks. The lady my wife saw was Japanese in appearance, and was probably Japanese (I'm not going to assume anything), but she did speak English.

I won't chime in on this one. It's too easy...

Shayne Parkinson was the first to figure out the answer. The lady my wife saw was our pilot. Since pilot's on international flights are required to speak English, my wife immediately knew she could speak English.
Take it away Shayne. |

Yes, that's quite a useful piece of trivia!
A multi-part question for the oenophiles. There are various lists of the cépages nobles, or "noble grapes" of French wine-making. There's something of a consensus on seven of them: four red, three white. I've a list in front of me from a reference book that lists eight red and six white varieties (including those seven), and I'll use this list to declare whoever supplies the most names the Winner and Master Oenophile. |

Excellent work, Bilbo, and an unassailable lead.

One white still to go (I was a bit surprised that Gewurtztraminer wasn't on the book's list, as I think it's better-known than the one that is), and four reds. |
