Just got my Kindle DX in the mail. I'm about to transfer a few PDF files on to it to see just how well it will work for the purposes for which it was purchased.
Other than that, it may possibly become a fixture next to my bed for late night read-a-thons. |

Well, it would be nice if the DX could actually use the bookmarks that you create in Adobe Acrobat.
Highlighting of text does not work, however, highlights that you have already put into the document on the PC do come over just fine. The search function works fine, as long as the PDF document has been made OCR. The DX bookmark function would be MUCH better (since it doesn't bring over the PDF bookmarks) if it allowed you to edit the name of the bookmark instead of just noting that the mark is "page 17." When I combine a bunch of documents into one PDF, Adobe Acrobat automatically takes each document and creates a bookmark for that document in the master document. Now, if that function transferred over with the PDF, I would be very happy. Or, if I could make a note about what is on that page on the DX. But, sadly, not the case. I can make due with searching a document using a word that I know will appear on that page. I haven't tried creating a hypertext TOC for a file, but I will likely do that tomorrow and I'll let you know how or if that works. In the long run, however, for my purposes (which are no more than organizing hundreds and hundreds of client files and being able to refer to certain pages while I am creating other documents on my netbook), I think this is going to work out quite nicely. My original Kindle will still stay in my purse/pack so that I always have something to read. Likely, along with my client files, I will move the bazillion or so PDF manuals that I have downloaded over the years. You know, motherboard schematics, specs for various stuff I've purchased and which I generally have to repair/upgrade myself. The DX will definitely not replace any of my K1s, but it will be a huge help in getting all of my files organized. Just realized, I'm hungry. Need food. I'm going to close down for the evening, do the rest of my chores, and then see where the evening takes me (which will likely be back into my latest Discworld novel). Read for an hour and then tried a quick hyperlink table experiment on the DX. Hyperlinks definitely do not work in PDF on the DX. That's too bad. However, I can probably come up with an effective work around for my client documents (such as embedding "invisible" text in the PDFs) ... it's a little clumsy, but that would work for searching without trying to create a paginated TOC for each document and then using the menu to go to that page. I dunno .... I'll just have to see what works best for me. Now that I've eaten, it's time for a shower, the rest of my chores and then bed. Last edited by RickyMaveety; 06-16-2009 at 09:38 PM. |

I really have to wonder who designs the software for these things. iRex has two systems with nice large screens and the ability to read PDFs, and neither has the right functions for document management as you're describing it.

Trying to wake up. My husband has an early (for us) appointment with a hearing specialist.
We work second shift hours, and most of the time I prefer it, but it can make things like doctor's appointments difficult. Most of the time we get up about 11 a.m. So, if you take it that we're approximately four hours behind the people on a "normal" schedule, getting up at 8 for us is like getting up insanely early for anyone else. Both of us also have to work today, after doing this whole get up early thing yesterday too. I think I'm coming home and napping until I have to take Chris to work! |

That reminded me to check my grades. (I handed in work late in one class, and the prof was late in the other.) Got two A's. Much relief.

![]() Verencat and Shel, relax a little! It' summer vacation. Even if it only lasts for a few days, everyone needs a little "down" time. I'm looking forward to not having to get Ryleigh to school in the mornings and being able to relax over my first cup of coffee! ![]() |

This is the 6000th post on this thread! And I'm trying to figure out how to work Magamont Montsnmags, MD (lapsed) into the When Harv Met Vera Saga.
