Fine......I accept you apology. Will put the stick away for now.

I first thought that that keyboard would be a major hindrance. But, since the K3 is much sleeker than the original Kindle, it's only a vague annoyance. Sometimes. Mostly, it's handy if you're wanting to search for a specific phrase or when you go to the Amazon store (or wikipedia...)

But, if I had the choice between a keyboard and wifi or a touchscreen and wifi-less, I'd go for the second...
Touch screens hate me.

paralysis by overanalysis: the verdict

After much hand-wringing I finally decided which reader to get.

I'd been considering waiting until Xmas (or at least black Friday) to see what deals were available. But I got some astute advice from Clint Bradford and some wisdom/exasperation from my wife. Waiting for a great deal was also forgoing the pleasure of something I really wanted to do. And so I decided to take the plunge and get:

A Kindle 3 for my early-October birthday!

But then I went shopping with the family this morning and Target was clearing out the Sony PRS300's for 75 bucks, so I got one of those instead.

I know its limitations from reading on the board (limited memory, slow boot up if you load it with too much, etc). And its battery seems to be completely irreplaceable, which still kills me. But I really am just looking for a machine to read on and of all the machines I actually got to hold in stores over the last few months, I always liked its sturdiness, size, and looks.

So I am very happy. It's charging up now.
In the end, the various readers are just the tools and the books are the thing.

Can't wait to start reading them!

thanks to everyone for all their help and I'm glad I can get off the sidelines and really be part of this community as a fellow e-reader.

Enjoy - it's a great deal for a fabulous little reader. My only complaint was the memory size was too small for my collection.

Since you don't plan to buy many books, you may want to check and see if your library offers e-Books. The Sony models are compatible with the libraries that use OverDrive, with no removing DRM required. I've saved myself a TON of money reading library books this year.

i read this thread with great interest, as I'm shopping for an ereader for my early october birthday too. I have also become a victim to "paralysis to overanalysis", except that for me its between the bebook neo, pocketbook 302, kindle 3 (of course) and the forthcoming bookeen orizon (if it ever gets released!).

congratulations on taking the plunge - how are you liking it?

I think the best advice i read was

Sure. But think of the enjoyment and satisfaction you will be missing by NOT having a Kindle3 in your hands ... wirelessly downloading free and paid-for books and magazines and blogs.

But you know what. YOU had better wait 'till Christmas, 2015. Because there might be something else on the market ...

You can either sweat this out 'till your sweat glands are dry, or purchase a Kindle3. OR a Kobo. I bought my Kobo as much for what is does NOT do as for what it does do - mainly, it does NOT have wireless connectivity. That keeps me READING BOOKS. Because to be honest with you, I also have a Kindle3 WiFi, and I spend too much time screwing around with experimental wireless apps and NOT actually reading books.
So true. I need to do the same and just MAKE A DECISION. My problem is that my family is providing the funds for it and they aren't doing so until the end of september, so I have nothing else to do except read about ereaders (well, I also have been reading and getting some ebooks in preparation) and so my brain is going into meltdown over the whole issue. I think it may come down to eeny meeny miny mo

Well done you!

I love my PocketBook 360, but the 302 model did not make as big impression on me as 360.
At the very beginning of October we are going to learn about prices of the new PocketBook models, so you might wait a few days longer until you pull the trigger.
