Worked for HarryT

Devices with UK Voda SIM have the serial prefix B00A, I bought mine from amazon.com so it's not about where it came from (amazon.co.uk just redistributes the international version afaik)

Anyway, I'm gonna try it in 2 other EU countries in the next few weeks, chances are it will work.

Restricting certain webpages is done at the proxy level, it might be that those with restricted access go through a different proxy. The server my device uses is 87.238.84.64.
Perhaps blocked users should determine the IP their coming from (wikipedia changesets might display the IP if you edit a page without logging in)

I have been told that it depends where you are in France as to whether the Kindle will work. I am in South West France - department 17 and before I lash out, I would really like to be sure it will work!

I said "registered to", NOT "where it came from".

The registering of a kindle has nothing to do from where you buy it. You register it at an amazon account. The land that one has seems to be the deciding factor if you have 3g internet or not.

And HarryT is from the UK which have unrestricted access. Only country in Europe AFAIK.

My Kindle came today, and I can access everything using WiFi, but hith 3G ONLY Wikipedia in English (not even Amazon.com does work!).

When I try to read a German Wikipedia article I get a blank screen - "some restrictions"... SOME?

Facebook-connect is OFF
Blogs are OFF
Newspapers are OFF

Not amused. I mean, I could understand restrictions regarding almost anything, and I did spend the extra bucks for the 3G because I thought that I can at least access the Wikipedia when reading in my garden. But now it seems I can only access something useful when being at home, where I have access to anything anyway. This should be more clear when advertising the thing to German customers. And yes, there are some topics that are not available in both languages. Mr. Amazon, pls!

I decided not to buy any ebooks from Amazon until they provide full 3G access for Europe like they offer to the US. Free downloads will do for time being.

Apologies for asking a question I think may have been answered already..

I have a UK amazon.co.uk account and have bought several books already for use on the Kindle apps for iPhone and mac. If I were to buy a US 3G Kindle, would the 3G side of it work in buying from the UK store? Would buying a UK power adapter be sufficient to power it? And would I be able to take a newspaper subscription on it, either over 3G or WiFi?

Germany - 3G

Hi all,

I received my Kindle 3 yesterday; my parents in law brought it with them from the US where I had it delivered to a relative. According to the package, I have a Vodafone sim.

Luckily, here in Germany I seem to be able to access the whole internet via 3G and have not yet experienced any restrictions (however, I haven't used the internet a lot on the Kindle so far). In my Kindle account, I still have registered the US delivery address as my home address (while the invoice address is my German address)...

Pretty odd, how different this works...

Kind regards

Lars

3G workaround also problematic...

My workaround for the 3G disaster was to provide Amazon with the US adress of a relative in Florida. (I plead for "not guilty" as I was acting in self-defense) So, I thought, they have what they need to fulfill their whateveritis-contract with Vodafone Germany.

BUT... it worked only for a short time. Then the message appeared to contact Amazon support as I obviously travel abroad and need to check this by phone or mail. Seems Amazon is making trouble all the time, guess what, I could install "Every Word", but the next item (the other game) was restricted a second later. And I'm talking about wifi access, not 3G! What are they protecting? The Kindle from being used by its owner? They have NOTHING regarding costs providing at least access to the German Wikipedia.

@Hulk

I think you are safe as long as you don't order anything. You could use the 3G browser for months without Amazon bothering you, but as soon as you order something from outside the states, customer service will start sending you mails asking you to prove you're an American citizen. At least, that's what I think.

So, don't order anything (even no 'free' books).

My International K3's web-browser worked out of the box in South Africa, no tweaking or resetting required, with unrestricted 3G web-browsing and not just the Kindle store, Wikipedia etc. as some have reported.

Switzerland here:

International K3. (Voda)
Unlimited browsing.

My account on amazon.com also notes that I am Swiss (and therefore everything costs about 2$ more)
