If I lived in the US and took a trip to Canada to download a book in the public domain in Canada but not the US then traveled back to the US with the digital book in hand, would I be breaking US copy right law?

No, because you wouldn't be making a copy in the US. Of course, you would be making copies when you read it, but I suspect that "fair use" would cover the incidental copies you make of the work when reading it.

Semantics? Hmmm ... everything available is inherently copyrighted by its creator, whether formally submitted to a country's copyright issuing agency or not. It is nation-by-nation selling restrictions that I believe you are talking about, and not whether or not an author's copyright is valid. |

Research the Berne Convention - which requires its signatories to recognize the copyright of works of authors from other signatory countries in the same way as it recognizes the copyright of its own nationals. I believe all the countries mentioned in this thread are signatories. |

Canada has a term of lifetime+50. UK has a term of lifetime+70. USA has a term of lifetime+70 now, but a mixture of terms for older works. It's perfectly possibly for one work to be in copyright in UK and USA, but out of copyright in Canada, or to be out of copyright in USA and Canada, but still in copyright in the UK. For example, Ernest Bramah died in 1957. All his works are still in copyright in the UK. All his works are out of copyright in Canada. His works published before 1923 are out of copyright in USA, but those published after 1922 are still in copyright in USA. If a book published between 1923 and 1963 inclusive didn't have its copyright renewed in USA, it will now be out of copyright there, although it might well still be in copyright in Canada and the UK.
