I just had another page slow, first time with the new update, darn it ! Was hoping it was fixed. I had just been browsing the kindle store and opened a few samples to try them out, before reading a book, so maybe it just got overloaded.........anyway, the pages slowed just like before, didn't wait to see if it rebooted, just did a restart from the menu and it was okay after.
I have emailed the feedback email addy with the full details........not tried mine in the sun yet, haven't got any ![]() |

I owe some of you apologies.
I read the reports of slow page turns in the sun and it sounded silly to me. I have had periodic slow down so I figured the sun thing must just be a coincidence. I took my Kindle into the sun for the first time today. It is 73 degrees F outside. (I'm in Colorado, so the sun seems warmer than that.) Within 5 minutes the page turns slowed down - spending a long time on the inverse page. This is repeatable. Several minutes inside and the page turns speed up. Go back into the sun and they slow down. I sent CS another email - we'll see what they say... -M |

I am following this issue on a few different sites, and I cannot recall seeing anyone that said they tried their Kindle in the sun and did not experience this. I may have missed it though - are there any out there?

Would this maybe be an issue with the Pearl screens? I hope not as that would also mean Sony will have the same problem.

The EEVblog reviewer heated it up at ~35°C and it worked fine, so I don't think it's normal behaviour...
Another way to trigger this is when charging the Kindle, the battery will heat up a bit, and blam, slow page turns. |

A lot of electronics components including the CPU are rated at 160 F (71C) while the battery might be lower (at ~ 60 C). Since it appears most ereaders do not have a fan, they would rely on natural convection to dissipate the heat. I saw the video illustrating how to take apart the kindle 3. The kindle is very compact and thin; a sizable portion of the kindle is allocated to the battery whereas most of the circuit are covered under the EM shield.
With today's technology, sizes of the electronic circuits can be made very small and light weight. However, the biggest challenges of downsizing of electronics are power supply, memory and heat dissipation. Most integrated circuit components utilize a built-in heat sink or have enough air moving to dissipate the heat they generate. Heat dissipation can be even more challenging for compact devices which might have limited internal air space for air movement. |

Just read on the Sony forum that a user of the new 350 which has a pearl screen has noticed a slow down in his page turns after a while, left alone for about 5 minutes and it returned to normal.........seems this may be a pearl screen issue, will be interesting to see if more of the new Sony's suffer same as the Kindle when they start arriving.

This got buried to page 5, and I see a few new threads popping up regarding this issue. Just pushing back to the front.
My K3 Wifi just arrived and is charging now, will check to see if I have the page slow problem. I would think yes.... We shall see. |

On Kindleboards it seems that some owners of white Kindles are not having the problem. Since it appears to be a heat, rather than sunlight issue, it may have to do with how the graphite colored frame absorbs the heat (much more so than the white) rather than the screen itself? But I'm not an engineer

Kindle3 graphite 3G+Wi-Fi page turns nice a quick and then slow down to 2 seconds or more when in bright sunlight, either outdoors or inside near a bright window.
Heat is not the issue. Happens in 75F outdoor weather just a few minutes after leaving a 73F air-conditioned house. Kindle is cool to the touch. I fully charged battery, turned wireless and 3G off, soft reset, hard reset. Same thing. After it sits for about 20 minutes out of bright sunlight, it goes back to normal. Sent for replacement. The page turns were terrible right out of the box and after charging for 6 hrs. My K3 was only 2 wks. old, so I sent both back and waiting for Amazon to solve the issue. Then I'll re-order. |

Follow-Up - GRRR...
I also cross posted at kindleboards - I'm not sure of the etiquette but no one yelled at me the last time I posted both places. I received my replacement. Overall it seems a little snappier but it still gets sluggish in the sun. I have the two kindles side by side, and the slow page turns come on at the same time leading me to believe the problem is either exposure to heat or light and it hasn't been over 80 degrees F outside. I wrote to customer service and I got an email with the standard 'call us' message. I reluctantly called. The CS rep was very friendly, but apparently thought I was crazy. He claimed he had never heard of the problem - even though I assured him that I know multiple people had reported before me. He went as far as to say there was no way sunlight could make the page turns slow down. When I suggested heat could be the problem he acknowledged that was a possibility. Then he told me he would search open tickets to see if a fix was already in the works and he told me there were no tickets that had anything to do with slow page turns in the sun - so he started one for me. I think it is time for everyone with slow page turns in the sun to call CS! It is all very discouraging. I think it would be easier if I didn't like my K3 so much. Supposedly it's in the hands of the developers now and I should hear back soon. -M |

EDIT: just got an email right now saying that they'll have to look into the problem more deeply. |
