1. Free 3G web browser.
Otherwise, I'd have stuck with my Sony PRS-505. Nice bonuses that put me over the top: 2. Pearl screen. (I always thought my early-production 505's screen was too dark.) 3. e-Ink is the better way to read all those free Kindle books, than reading them on Kindle for PC. (In other words, their free books helped suck me in to buy their e-Ink device.) |

Well I was looking for a second reader so the wife and I could read at the same time (sharing isn't possible with ereaders).
I waited for the revamped 6" Astak EZ Reader, gave up waiting. Looked seriously at the Kobo. Two things put me off, 1) firmware updates were only available through the Windows software (there is a Linux version but not officially released so at some point they could just stop supporting it and I'd be back at square one). Now there is the ability to do f/w updates via SD is great, but came after I ordered the K3, and (2) I don't see why an e-ink device needs to shutdown after inactivity (30 second boot). Firmware will fix that but when? The K3 was announced, the price was damn good. If I bought just the Kindle it would have come in cheaper than just the Kobo here in Aus. So overall; Pros; - New higher contrast screen - Faster page turns - PRICE!!! - No need to have a Windows/OSX machine to maintain the device - Did I mention PRICE??? - From readings, (whilst a small list) apparently the supported file formats work well, unlike others that their supported file list works ok. - TTS does not sound like a robot. Cons; - Hasn't arrived yet (in transit). - Ummm, wife has claimed ownership (though as the price she says I can buy myself one YAY). Wifi is a nice feature but if there was no wifi at the current price I still would have gone for it. |

What caused me to order the Kindle 3 (my first dedicated ebook device, using an Ipod Touch currently), was the video on youtube by Stuff.tv as mentioned in the first posts. Also the low price of the wifi only version helped tremendously too.
Looking forward to receiving it (ordered in mid August so I'm anxiously waiting!) |
