I think there are a lot of good ideas on this list, and I hope that B&N integrates a number of them.

But the no. 1 thing for me--and mentioned several times on this list is a better dictionary with better integration!! I'd like to be able to scroll through a list of words forwards and backwards--now if I don't know exactly how to spell a word, the dictionary is useless. And I find the dictionary that comes with the nook very lacking--many words are missing.

Although I really like my nook--have had it for a full week now, I must say I'm very disappointed in the dictionary. The main reason I bought the nook was for the dictionary... (I already have a Sony 505.) My husband has a Sony 900 and the dictionary and integration of the dicitonary is light years ahead of the nook.

Good point Starearedkid! I often am in the middle of a few books at once. The nook developers could do something like Sony has on the 505. On my 505, I can call up a list of all my bookmarks...not just in the current book, but in all books I've set them in. Then I can choose the bookmark and immediately go to it. An easy way to switch between books--you just need to remember to set a bookmark before leaving the book.

I have the Nook wifi, and if you put it on "Airplane Mode" the wifi is disabled and battery life improves (at least a bit). Surely there is a similar feature available for the 3G/wifi model.

My wish list:

1. Folder organization. Although I read hundreds of books per year, I generally keep fewer than fifty on my reader at a time by periodically deleting read books and adding new ones. Even so, folders would be helpful to organize by author or genre.

2. Enable cover view with book info for B&N books. Oddly enough, the book covers are visible only in the library view for books purchased from B&N. With my sideloaded books (in the My Documents folder), if I load an image of the book cover with the book itself and name both files the same, I can see the book cover in color in the LCD window while I'm reading the book. The only way to see the cover for books in "My B&N Books" is while sorting through the main library view and enabling "Show Covers." Oddly enough, this makes the reading experience LESS enjoyable when reading B&N-purchased books than ones purchased elsewhere and sideloaded.

3. Show black-and-white image of the book along with the title and author on the main screen in the library view. This was one feature I really enjoyed on my Cybook Gen 3. It made browsing through the library more like looking through a shelf of paper books. Even in the B&N library with cover view enabled, the book info on the images often is too small to read and I have to look back and forth between the screens to get the info I want.

4. Allow more file types, such as .html, and, dare I even hope, .prc. (Yeah, I know the latter is unlikely, but I can dream, can't I? )

There are two things I would personally like addressed.

The first thing of course is better organisation of My Documents... Then so does everyone else.

My other peeve that I've come across is the Table of Contents implementation. As it currently works, it is fine for the average novel. However, it is absolutely useless for something like the Bible. The problem is that the nook seems to "flatten" multi-level TOC's to a single level, therefore negating the benefits of having a multi-level toc in the first place.
Therefore navigating to, say, Revelations in the Bible (the last book) involves a LOT of swiping...

Satisfied, but could be better...

So here is my list .

1.) A way to go landscape . Used a friend's Kindle and i loved reading landscape. And the way that the nook is shaped would make me believe that they would want you to go landscape!

2.) A better integrated Dictionary-Something on the touchscreen itself so you dont have to go away from the reading... DUH BN lol. And if you spell something wrong, it should give sugestions in a list...

3.) A better battery life . They say 5-10 days, i get maybe 7 with wireless off, and i dont even hit 1000 pages (The shorter battery life times are usally when i dont have time to read a lot in a concentrated time). I never use the touchscreen and the brightness is a 0.

4.) A notes app, a plain old notes app. I really would like one, it wouldn't even have to be complex... I just want to write down my notes.

5.) Acually one of the top pet peeves- The stupid arrows to make notes/highlights or to use the dictionary. Its hard enough, but then you cant hit the up button and go to the bottom of the screen?? Make the buttons bigger, more spaced out, and FASTER if possible!

6.) More settings!

7.) Like everyone says, please BN, get your head out of the sand and get My Documents fixed, make it exacly like the BN library!

8.) It needs to be FASTER :P lol.

9.) I want to be able to organize by folders!

10.) More apps

11.) Most of what other people said were great. If BN can fix these problems, the nook will KILL the Kindle !

Dont get me wrong, i love my nook, i just think they better come out with a huge update, or the new Kindle really might blow them out of the water .

Security as mentioned previously would be real good. Pass code to wake up the nook so that if it is lost or stolen, it would be useless to whoever has it. I guess that it should at least show the "settings" page for contact info. Also, the ability to enable or disable this security as I'm sure that there's lots who do not want this feature.

Also, it would be nice to get notification on the "shop" section when your wishlist ebooks are reduced in price - my $7.99 item going down to $5.99 my prompt my purchase.

On their site, they are saying that they are working on such a technology. So far there has been no indication whether or not they will be able to go forth with it or not.

I just heard BN put themselves on the market , so they might not be coming out with a 1.5 for awhile if never. If this is the case, then i will softroot. My opinion is i shouldn't have to softroot the nook to get some of the features that the nook NEEDS to have. Smack on the head lol.

If B&N releases a SDK & enable 3rd party apps, most of the features requested would be there in few months.

That's exactly what I thought, too, getting ideas and thinking of things to do all the time. Hence, there's now an app for that if you've softrooted your nook (see the nookdevs site or nookMarket). As I've only just put an initial release online, be aware that there may be issues and don't put all your knowledge into it just yet.

Cool Font size

  • Another choice of font size in the "medium" range, something like "medium large".
  • Certainly folders and the ability to see book covers also in "My library"
  • Zoom in PDF images

Bye

You actually can see book covers when books from the "My Documents" folder are open, something that you can't do with books in the "My B&N Books" folder. If you load an image of the cover (double click on the image at the B&N website and save to your computer), label it with the same name as your book, and load it onto the Nook with the book itself, it will show up on the "find" etc first LCD screen when you open your book and subsequently any time you activate the LCD screen while you are reading. (Calibre will load this image for you automatically if you load the book onto your reader with this program.) You don't get the scroll-through-the-covers feature in the library browse view like you do for "My B&N Books" view, but I find the ability to glance at the cover while I've got the book open more valuable/enjoyable.

New Poll for features

Hi All,

I just compiled a list of features that are mentioned in this thread. The poll I just posted is just an informal way of seeing what is most important to Nook users for the next update.

You can make more than one choice. However, what I'm interested in seeing are the top three choices.

Just a disclaimer: I don't work for B&N.

I just like the product and thought I'd get a list together to see if I can get a good idea of what's missing and what would have the most impact on users. I am not a programmer so I can;t do any of these things but, well, let's just take it one step at a time and let's see if we can make something happen.
