Because people who own portable game machines are big consumers of books as well? Lol. Not that some aren't, but I'd bet their reader numbers are even lower than that of iPad owners.

The idea of reading actual books or technical articles is not a very good revenue stream. You're spenting too much TIME reading and not buying anything. AT&T isn't getting any of your cash from download charges.
You aren't reading any flashy magazine content from monthly subscription paywalls with ads for still more flashy subscription content.
Or rehashed works with added animation widgets also from subscription portals.

I don't know what the iPad was intended for but it 's not a reader.

I know exactly what iPad is for: What I bought it for -- e-books, e-mail and Internet. Other buyers will have their own uses.

And so it is for me. Finally! A decent PDF reader. Now you'll say that PDFs are not a real book format?

The iPad has some versatility as a reader. I use it with iBooks, Kobo, Stanza and Amazon.

I also have a Sony reader. Its still useful. Now it helps me pick up the dust off the shelf where it lays.

I guess if the weight of the device doesn’t bother you, or the screen glare which forces you inside doesn’t bother you, or if you don’t mind the long recharge times, or you like greasy finger prints on your screen, and you like buying from a single bookstore. Then you have found your PERFECT reading device. However, you could have bought an old Fujitsu tablet off Ebay with those same features for $100 (with a free bumper case). Plus you could annotate and sync your PDF’s along with many other things your iPad can’t handled.

Pull the wool over your own eyes - the iPad is not a reader.

Lol. You seem intent on telling iPad owners what we should think or prefer. Your disapproval doesn't matter.

I own a DS Lite (which I read ebooks on); also a GBA, a PS2, a Wii, and an Atari 2600. I also own several thousand pbooks and an increasing number of ebooks.

Just because someone enjoys one form of entertainment doesn't mean they reject all others. After all, the 100 Classic Book Collection for the DS wasn't published just to waste space on store shelves. And it's definitely not wasting space: It's #73 in the top 100 video game-related items on Amazon, across all platforms.

So don't diss my DS!

As for why on Earth someone who owns as many books as I do would shell out twenty bucks for some PD books for the DS? Simple: the DS fits in much smaller pockets than my 505 (or your iPad) and thereby reduces the number of times I find myself with that horrible, empty feeling of booklessness.

I wonder what the people who go on and on about "Internet addiction" would say about the fact that I hate not having reading matter of some sort available at all times? All of their criteria could apply to me and my reading habits. I guess because paper books were around before the Internet, it's okay.

(oh, and Ogg, if we all liked the same things, there would be a terrible shortage of haggis)

You've misread into my post. I wasn't "dissing" any machine. My husband is a gamer, by the way. I was responding to a post in response to an ongoing discussion about why CD books had not taken off. Someone posted about a game machine serving as a portable reader. I think it unlikely that most people buy a game machine to read on; not that there aren't some who will want to read on it, too.

I doubt if many people buy game machines to read on, but from the look of it, there are certainly a lot of us buying books for our game machines. Perhaps I've become a bit hyper-protective of my DS.

What it comes down to -- and what Ogg isn't getting -- is there is no one true way. If you want to read books on an iPad and I want to read books on a DS and someone else wants to read books on an ebook reader or a netbook or their desktop computer or the Jumbotron at the stadium, it's all good.

Now that's something I'd like to see ... ebook night from my local minor league baseball team. They could put some baseball-themed short story on the big display, hand out a collection of sample ebooks (I'm sure there are some local authors who would love to get involved) on CD (gotta be cheaper than those bobbleheads!), all kinds of stuff. I think they did a kids' book night -- time for one for the grown-ups!

Ogg, I sugest that you actually experience using an Ipad before posting such eroneous comments.
Screen glare: Yes you cant read the Ipad in direct sunlight, but her in Aus we are discouragedfrom spending toomuch time in direct sunlight, rather bad for the skin you see.

Recharge times: My Ipad simply gets attached to a charger while I am working and is ready when I need it. No issue.

Greasy Finger Prints: Yep, this is an issue, but easily resolved with a wipe of a micro fibre cloth.

Single source of e-books: This is simply not true, I purchase from Amazon (kindle),Kobo, Ibooks and smash words. For physical books, I need to drive 25 minutes and within that radius I have a choice of two stores, if I drive a little further I can access a third.

PDF's: The Ipad handles these subperbly, and they can be annotated using the Ianotate app.

Exactly. I support all forms of reading. I don't care what device people want to use, whether they prefer print, etc. I just think it's illogical to try to apply personal preferences and circumstances to others. I like reading on iPad, but that doesn't mean I think everyone should get one. I returned a Sony e-reader, but I don't bash 'em. Simply because a device doesn't suit me doesn't make it a bad product. Having choice is good for all readers.

Pull the wool over your own eyes - the iPad is not a reader.
  • It's a BIG screen, weight is proportional.
  • I read inside because it's Canada. We got bugs during summer and snow in the winter. And my sofa is inside...
  • The screen is treated with an oleo phobic compound. Grease will not remain on it. One quick wipe with my glasses' cloth and it's gone.
  • I USE FOUR BOOK STORES (why did I have to shout there) and some of the 4,000 ebooks I own.
  • Yes, I have found the perfect reader, and I can read in total darkness.
  • I have NEVER had to wait for a charge. I put it in the dock every night and it lasts all of the next day.
  • PDFs are easily annotated and are now supported by iBooks.
  • And by now you must have guessed what suggestion I have for where to put your ball of wool. Yes it has to do with your bumper case.
  • You really have to know a device before you put it down. If you wanted to say you preferred ink, I would have understood. I've had a 500 for four years now, so I know what it is to look around for strong lighting. That must be why you prefer reading in sunshine, it's the only place it's useful.

I was never really sold on the ipad. Always figured the screen just wouldn't hold up to eink.
Then I went to the apple store and used an ipad demo.

If I had the money, I'd be buying one. I like the size. I'd keep my 505, but oh man, I'm in total techno lust after only 15min :-D
