That citation is rather self defeating, isn't it?

But, since that would make things "safer" for us that's better, right?

Life is supposed to have risks - I'd much prefer open systems where some "bad" things might slip through than having companies spoon-feed me. In the case of Apple, jailbreaking should be a supported option - let people take the risk if they want to and let the others use the official App store. And for ebooks, all devices and bookstores should support at least one book standard. Giving that EPUB seems to be the closest thing to a standard right now, hopefully Amazon will support it at some point.
You are free to take such risks. Just buy a different brand. If people agree with you, open systems will be more successful than closed ones.

kjk, you are assuming an ideal market -- the kind with zero barriers to entry, perfect information, and totally rational choice on the part of the participants. Unfortunately, that kind of market only exists on paper. People don't buy iPads (or cars, or clothes, or breakfast cereal) because that's what best meets their needs. They buy them because it's trendy, because they're swayed by advertising, because they're locked in by some legacy content, whatever it might be. "Just buy a different brand" isn't always an option. Further, once a particular company or platform reaches some critical size, they get sales because of their market position alone; like celebrities who are famous for being famous, some companies are big because they're big.

(note: I shouldn't post when I'm this irritable)

How do you possibly come to that conclusion based on my post?

You can either have a useful discussion, or be annoyingly patronising and have people walk away in disgust.
Pick one.

True. But it's when a company becomes a monopoly and we end up not having a choice at all that concerns me. We have Android making some dents in the App Store, which I hope it continues to do. On the same token, i also dislike Windows' monopoly in the desktop market and I hope Linux/MacOS continue to eat away at that.

As for ebooks, I always assumed the Amazon store was the main place to buy them, but I'm happy to see that other major retailers are popping up to challenge that. Now, if they could only agree on a standard format / DRM scheme, that would even be better.

Sometimes the difference isn't very clear.

I have read of at least one person who clicked on it because he thought that would be a joke.

It's malware for your bank account.

In other words, you want Apple to start holding iPhones/iPads/etc hostage or should they start pursuing legal action against deadbeats who don't pay for services? Seems like it would end up costing everyone else since Apple would be forced to do away with the free in-store tech support.

The problem is people don't want to take personal responsibility anymore. If something goes wrong, it's someone else's fault. It's not because of something they did.

Here's a perfect example. On another forum, someone was complaining that it was Apple's fault he dropped his phone and the glass cracked. He was mad because Apple wouldn't give him a free replacement and he wouldn't take responsibility even after it was pointed out that it was his fault.

But Apple doesn't have a monopoly on smartphones-RIM is the market leader. And I'm pretty sure Android will overtake both of them within 12-18 months.
