In theory, if one ensures the Whispernet remains off, manually downloads the 2.5.2 update and updates their device, Amazon would have no way of knowing that one's Kindle has been updated. As long as Whispernet remains off, I would think that any subsequent book purchases (downloaded to computer for transfer as opposed to device) would be DRM'd via the old PID scheme and, therefore, could still be liberated with tools mentioned. Of course, if/when Whispernet is activated that would presumably change everything.

Has anyone tested this yet?
The K2 has to register with WN that it has the update before it will let you create collections. And it has to be connected to WN to back up those collections, or you may lose them with a reset of the K2.

I'm not as concerned with missing out on the collections feature as I am with trying to determine exactly when and how the current drm scheme goes tits up.

Just looking for someone to verify that the old process still works if the wireless is left off after a manual update. Once that's determined, turn it on and enjoy the collections feature. It's too late for me to try it, but hopefully someone else sees this and can report back on the outcome.

If you run the update automatically, then the DRM changes as soon as the K2 reboots. If you run it manually, then the DRM updates once the K2 sees the network again, but you won't be able to read any new purchases on the K2. Once the update occurs, DRM is broken. Either way, you're kinda borked. Which is why I'm keeping my font hack in place, only to stop the update from running.

You're saying if you manually update and leave your wireless off -- then go to amazon's website (on pc), purchase a new book, download it to your pc, transfer it to the K2 via usb -- that book will be unreadable?

It's not that I doubt you, but I'd like a little proof that someone has tried it. You say you haven't done the update yet, so how can you be sure?

EDIT: and if you're an "insider", how about a few discrete "tips" (on the proper forums of course) to get us going?

So, if one does update manually, you are telling us that there is no <collections> option appearing anwhere on the device? Has anyone actually tested this? I hope someone who has will chime in here.

Personally, I don't depend upon Amazon to back up anything.

I hope everyone who's worried about this knows that the dedrm tools for Kindle4Pc still work, and are actually easier to use than the mobidedrm scripts?

And they work great... for anybody not using Linux. I'm happy for those that have a solution that works for them - I'm just feeling a little left out.

I'm going to jump on the bandwagon here with my concerns. Wireless is spotty in my area so I leave it off all the time. I've just manually updated my K2 with 2.5.2 and all the current content seems to work fine; problem is, I don't remember what still has DRM attached. I am curious about 2 things:

If I don't turn wireless on and check back with Amazon:

1. Will my current content that still has DRM work on my K2 with 2.5.2? Easy to test but I don't want to change anything until I finish my current book.

2. From what I am reading, any new content I purchase will be DRM'd with the old scheme (PID). Will this work with 2.5.2?

And once I turn wireless on, get a strong enough connection to check back with Amazon will I have to re-download all my books I couldn't DeDRM so they work with the new scheme?

Inquiring minds whant to know.

Big Waffles,

As you have manually updated with WN off and it remains off - are you able to create collections?

Hopefully, someone can jump in here to answer your specific questions - I'm still sitting on the sidelines and have not yet updated.

P.S. I have visited North Pole!

Yes, I had drmed books (purchased with 2.3) stored on my computer. After updating to 2.5.2, I transferred them back to the device and no problems reading them.

Waiting for someone to confirm this. Feel like buying the cheapest book you can find to test it out? (manual download and usb transfer)

I don't think so. If I'm understanding you correctly, this would be the scenario that the vast majority of users (who never dedrm) would be facing after a manual or automatic update. Plus I think my answer to question #1 proves this.

Actually, someone had created a Calibre plug-in, which meant all you had to do was download to computer and import it into Calibre. Really elegant situation. Kindle4PC was easy to install, and it does work great, but it does require an extra step. Oh, how lazy we are!!!

BTW, if someone hasn't done so already, I downloaded a book I had bought in Jan (before 2.5.2). Mobidedrm did not work. Thankfully, I was up to date on downloading all my books and removing DRM immediately after purchase.

Yes, I have the collections made and populated. I'll do a soft-reset tonight to see if they disappear.

I'll take a look for a new book tonight.

That's good to know. It sounds like they are using a DRM algorithm that can use the PID or the new scheme to read both versions. As stated previously, it sounds like once you update to 2.5.2 and then check in with Amazon is when they start using the new process for the DRM. I'm guessing that the check-in with Amazon is the key. If I buy a book tonight, I'll see if I can DeDRM it, that should let me know if it is still using the old PID DRM system.
