It's the best "all round" gadget, to be sure. If I had to select a dedicated reader, though, it would still be the BeBook Neo. I'd put the iPad in second place as a reader, primarily because the iBooks app doesn't support folders. Add those, and it would be number one.

I just loved the way the pages turned!
The fluid movement of everything on screen was also a turn on.
The weight I could live with.
The price I couldn't

Fluidity is a great way to describe using an iPad...it is difficult to describe to people who have never touched one.

Like madman, I use a stylus as well. Since buying the stylus I haven't cleaned the screen on the iPad. By the way, cleaning isn't much of an issue. I was using the standard wipes that you use to clean any computer screen.

I'm not sure of the need to attack any device that many others like. I don't have a problem with anyone buying something that they think meets their needs. I happen to enjoy the iPad. I bought it after "playing" with one at a local Apple store. Like many others I thought I wouldn't like the "computer screen" but found the experience to be quite different. It works for me and I enjoy it. I'm sure I would enjoy some of the other devices as well but, for now, I am quite content with the iPad.

I've been meaning to get a stylus. I have Penultimate installed. My fingers don't cut it. :-P

I LOVE my iPad. I'm finding I use it far more than my laptop or netbook. And that it's more FUN. I love reading on it, too. And that's coming from a PC guy.

Yes, "fluid" is a good description of its performance. It just WORKS. I've never once seen it bogged down or choke. Most of the different apps I've gotten for free or cheap are really cool and truly useful.

I too don't get people who feel the need to attack the iPad or the folks who buy it. What kills me is that a lot of these "critics" are people who haven't even held an iPad in their hands, let alone spend any significant time with one. They just spout off judgments based on some specs or some biased review somewhere. I almost want to tell them "if you want all that other stuff, then get a freakin' netbook or laptop and don't complain about the size or form factor." There's always going to be a trade-off in some things. Besides, this edition of the iPad is the FIRST and-as we all know-the first version of any new tech device is BOUND to have glitches, quirks, shortcomings, limitations, etc. So far, as such, the iPad still excels and that's what amazes me.

Having been a PC-guy for a long time, I know that PC-people love to compare specs. They download spec sheets and pour over them, compare, analyze etc. They love to get that extra 50Mhz WITH 128Mb more RAM for peanuts and bathe in the joy of an awesome deal for a long time.

Maybe I outgrew that, maybe it was purely my switch to Mac that made me think different (huh huh ... yes, pun!). The main thing that can be said is that "it just works". Even if you don't know crap about computers, your mac will just work. Unless you have the misfortune of hardware malfunction, but that can happen anywhere. I mean mostly the OS, it's slick, no matter what machine you use it on. iPhone, MacBook etc. Even an 800Mhz iBook (that's the predecessor of the MacBook, by the way) can still run silky smooth with today's apps. iMovie will take a little longer, hehe

Anyhow, here's my daily dose of "I'm a mac".

I don't own an iPad, probably won't get one either.

JimKal and madman, which stylus do you use? Maybe I'll get one to take notes or doodle.

I bought my iPad without testing. I figured I'd take it home and really try it, then resell it if I didn't like it. My husband teases me about returning a lot of stuff, but I would've sold it to avoid the restocking fee. Turns out I love my iPad, mostly for reading.

I own laptops, netbooks and a Kindle, and I tried and returned a Sony e-reader. To me, they all (including iPad) have tradeoffs. It's about getting devices to meet your individual needs and not bashing others and making stupid assumptions about people because they prefer other devices.

I'd love to buy an iPad, but the bas$%&#s still aren't selling them yet in my country (NL). Don't know what's up with that, as just about every other Euro country has them at least for pre-order! It's June already and they promised Apr/May worldwide (I thought).

The Euro prices tend to be a little screwy - since when does $499 = €499? Only in the Apple-verse, I guess. Even with VAT and import it's a little skewed.

Oh well, I'll just keep experiencing the iPad vicariously by reading about everyone else's usage...

Very little. Taking VAT into account, European prices are about 5% higher than US prices.

This weekend (maybe it was on friday), there was this huge ad in the newspaper... You could get a discount on the Ipad, in their webshop.

The american prices seem skewed to us europeans who are used to pay what the sticker says without automatically adding 10% (depending on your province/state).
Add another couple percent for the import and you'll be not far from €499.
What DOES irk me is when this happens when you buy software or books online - I mean, there's no states in the internet

I use a Pogo Sketch (http://tenonedesign.com/sketch.php) which I find is excellent for general use, drawing, and taking notes. It's slim and feels quite comfortable...
