I've been reading eBooks since 2000. Back then on Pocket PCs and Palm Pilots. I've been absolutely fine with the display size and quality.
I've read quite a few books on iPhone when traveling light.
So I find the discussion about iPad and others causing eyestrain a bit exaggerated.
In my opinion, there only are 2 main arguments against tablets or other "non-ePaper" readers:
- Battery usually only lasts for about 5 hours. Seems to be what I get on iPad as well. 5 hours should be enough for a single reading marathon. But when traveling for 3 days or something like that, battery durations of 20+ hours of ePaper devices can be quite advantageous.
- ePaper readers usually are extremely light. I'm pretty sure, my HP iPaq did weigh twice as much as Cybook Opus does today. And I can't imagine, holding iPad for hours with one hand (which easily can be done with nook, Kindle 2, iRex 800 or similar units).
If those 2 criterias don't bother you (maybe you won't use a reader when traveling, but exclusively in the evening on the couch?), in my opinion you can go for a single multi-purpose unit like iPad or a "standard" tablet PC.

Yeah, I've read a decent amount on my girlfriend's iPad--doesn't bother my eyes at all. But as I've said many times, I hardly ever read for more than an hour at a time and a couple hours a day tops, so e-ink isn't a big deal to me.

For the two criteria you list--battery life I care about, but don't need the week or two of e-ink. The 10 hours the iPad gets is fine. If I can get a tablet that gets 7-10 hours I'm good to go as it would last me a day of heavy (for me) use and I don't mind charging every night or two.

Weight's not a huge issue either as long as we're talking no more than 2 pounds. Still super easy to stick in my attache/laptop bag/briefcase I use all the time.

And for non-business travel where I don't need to do real work, I can leave my laptop at home and just take my tablet for reading and checking e-mail, surfing the net. Vs. currently taking my 15" laptop and my Kindle!

I started ereading on an iPAQ. eink was late getting to Australia.

Feb last year I got my first real reader - a 6" Hanlin V3. It has mobi drm.

Then around Aug I agonised over a 6" EcoReader or a 5" Hanlin V5 because I could see epub becoming more common and I had digital editions on my laptop. I've never really trusted mobipocket since I lost books in the fiasco when their server was out for 3 weeks and had lost my bookshelf when it was back up. I could have changed the V3 to epub but then I'd have lost the mobi books. In the end I got both of them. The 5" is great to carry around in my handbag everywhere I go. And I used the EcoReader at home.

Then earlier this year I was in Dymocks, saw the neo and fell in love. My husband bought it for me and I now use it all the time at home.

So, V3 for last year's mobi drm. V5 for easy carrying anywhere. neo for reading at home. The EcoReader is just lurking waiting for my husband to be converted. He's a bit of a luddite.

I still reread my older Fictionwise ereader books on the iPAQ and my HTC Touch Pro.

If the nook ever becomes available here I'll buy one for the ereader books.

Oh, and I have Kindle for PC on my laptop so I could read a couple of books not available anywhere else.

I bought the second as a back up when my first one failed me when I was travelling . I much prefer the second one then the Sony. Having just come back again from travelling I have notice when charging them abroad the charge does not last as long as in the UK .

Two reasons for having multiple readers:
1. When my mom runs out of books and I give her my EZ Reader, she feels guilty about taking it away from me, even though I'm fine reading on my iPod Touch or laptop for a while. If/when I get an additional e-ink reader, it won't bother her to borrow one of them now and then.
2. I like shiny new toys! Unfortunately (or fortunately, depending on your point of view) finances prevent me from feeding the addiction as much as I would like.

At the moment I have just a PRS-505 which I love. However I would like to have something to read technical books in as well as scientific publications. And who knows... perhaps I can get a sick deal on an ebook reader and I would buy it just maybe for sharing/lending to other people.

Also having more than one reader is useful if one of them wants to take a dive or a walk in the rain or just slips under your beautiful buttocks and cracks =D

I have two devices upon which I read fiction, but only one I consider to be an ereader (the 505). It was just a pleasant surprise when I realized I could also get fiction onto my blackberry curve.

I check out other boards to see info about other readers, and I salivate over a few of them and think of what it would be like to have two.... then I wake up and I'm thankful for the one I do have!

Since I am not a big book buyer, I appreciate getting books for low prices or from the library (or any other free books). If I can't get books I want that way, or I'm not sure I will like the books enough to purchase for full price, I'll get them from the library (paper version) and lay off the ereader for a while. I am *always* reading, but not always from my gadget. To me, the gadgetry is not the important things, it's the availability of being with book. Being without reading material terrifies me!

I only have one reader but really should get a second in case I want to read something more than once.

I am just curious that why you guys have more than two readers. Is the reason that you are not satisfied with your previous one and then buy new one???
I love new technnology and I love reading. A sure combination I've actually owned 7 devices in total, but found that if they are too alike, only one gets used, so I sold the other one off. As it is, of the e-ink devices, I have one really portable, one versatile with good usability, and one with a large screen (and good for PDF).

If I had to suggest only one, I'd say a 6 inch would be best.

I agree with Ea and also think that 3 readers - one really portable, one versatile with good usability, and one with a large screen - is the optimal choice.
I have PocketBook 360 (portable one), PocketBook 302 (versatile one) and waiting for PocketBook 90x (large one) to join the family.
Plus as was mentioned in other posts if you have more than one reader you can lend it to a family member (my husband still doesn't have his own reader ).

Great idea.... but they want books in Danish, and they are expensive (like $25-35) and few and far between I'm the odd one who doesn't mind (even prefer if applicable) to read books in English
