No Spoon Man, there can be no rationalization or forgiveness. BP, for the sake of dollars, gambled on the life of the Gulf, and we all lost because of that risky gamble. I doubt that in the rest of my lifetime, it will not be cleaned up and will remain a dead zone for decades to come. It has destroyed the lives of both animals and people who depend on the Gulf for their living. This is not something that "Oopsie!" and an apology can whitewash away.

If the CEO and the rest of the top echelon at BP are allowed to walk around free after this crime and crisis is over, then justice will not have been served.

If you boycott BP, is there an ethical oil company to transfer your business to?

They all seem pretty ghastly; but according to http://www.mcspotlight.org/beyond/oil.html:
"The petroleum industry is described as the 'one of the world's least ethical industries' in a report by the Ethical Consumer Research Association, but obviously some are 'less bad' than others.
In the ECRA report, taking into account corporate responsibility and enviromental impact, they recommend as 'overall best buys' (read 'lesser of the evils');-
Murco (Murphy Oil Corp.), Anglo & Repsol (Repsol/Spanish State) and Q8 (Kuwaiti State)."

Only, none of them have outlets near me.

Well, I do not believe that the ends justify the means. And if BP went out of business, market logic states that other actors would enter the market to take its place.
wait... are you saying BP owned Exxon?

No, that can't be right ...

Note, Exxon appealed against judgements made against them and eventually lowered the fines !

another note the Valdez is now owned by a Hong Kong company, who operates it under the name Dong Fang Ocean; registered (as are many) in Panama .

That may be true, and there are no good alternatives for gasoline. However, BP is the villain here and I can certainly never give them a dime again. This is our Chernobyl. A whole region of the country is affected directly, and as quickly as it enters the food chain, it will affect the whole US.

My heart breaks more every day when I hear the daily reports.

What boycotting BP really going to accomplish. This could have happened to any other major oil company, I guarantee that all of them have similar business practices. But I will have little trouble boycotting BP as they don't really have gas stations in my area.

No, and that's a good catch. But the safety part of the operation was a BP operation, and they failed completely and willfully.

Similar, perhaps, but it appears that BP is the most egregious offender. If the worst of the pack is culled, the others will step out a little livelier.

As to whether a boycott will accomplish anything, I don't know--but I know for sure that not taking any action against BP will definitely accomplish nothing. If you don't play, you can't win.

The boycott of products is the only major action a consumer can legally take. Its illegal to block their drives/doors, you can't place signs/banners/fliers around because that becomes a legal issue.

Something else to think about... BB's nation wide are privately owned I do believe. Meaning that a total boycott of BP products will hurt someone else. Now, does that mean you shouldn't do it? Not at all, but just remember the other people affected by your actions here (something I have to remind myself of all the time actually). As for me, I'll send my business to Quick Trip.

I remember back when Gary "Radar O'Reilly Burghoff" used to be the TV spokesman for Gulf Oil as "That Gulf Guy"-- when Gulf was bought by BP, I think that they briefly recast him as "That BP Guy."

Is that relevant to this issue? Not remotely. But this is.

no love lost at all... but consider... you want them to pay their incredibly hefty fines that they will accumulate or just slither out in bankruptcy?
