If you don't mind I would propose

Anna Karenina by Leo Tolstoy.

The novel is currently enjoying popularity as demonstrated by a recent poll of 125 contemporary authors by J. Peder Zane, published in 2007 in The Top Ten, which declared that Anna Karenina is the "greatest novel ever written".

Have you read and enjoyed it? If so, it seems an excellent start.

Many times, since I was 14. The beginning chapters of part III, where Levin describes the works in the country still give me the deepest emotions, the same that I had the first time I read them and still always new and fresh. There is a musical quality, like one finds in Richard Strauss Vier letzte Lieder, atonal, almost arythmic, of great peace and communion with earth at large. IMHO, among the highest pages ever written. Of course I read it in translation.

Black Sun Rising by C.S. Friedman - 1st of the Coldfire Trilogy - "Hauntingly memorable protagonists, high drama, and vivid world-building mark the beginning of what promises to be a magnum opus of the imagination."

Quote:
The Coldfire trilogy tells a story of discovery and battle against evil on a planet where a force of nature exists that is capable of reshaping the world in response to psychic stimulus. This terrifying force, much like magic, has the power to prey upon the human mind, drawing forth a person's worst nightmare images or most treasured dreams and indiscriminately giving them life. This is the story of two men: one, a warrior priest ready to sacrifice anything and everything for the cause of humanity's progress; the other, a sorcerer who has survived for countless centuries by a total submission to evil. They are absolute enemies who must unite to conquer an evil greater than anything their world has ever known.

Day of the Triffids by John Wyndham. I just recently re-read it (first read was many years ago) and still enjoyed it thoroughly.

'Fattypuffs and thinnifers' by Andre Maurois

A children's book, but a classic, and a good read for adults too. Just re-read it the other day after many years, and was pleased to find it's as good as I remembered.

Welcome to Mobileread Lvov. Thanks for reviving this thread, but you'll have to keep We for later on. It looks like we got up to H in the second round of Alphabetical good reads before the thread went dormant.

So we need an "I". Any takers? We want a book beginning with "I" that is a favourite, an enjoyable read and re-read.
