Rule number one... No smoking before Noon. That helped to cut down the number before I actually really stopped altogether. It also made me find ways to fill in my mornings without a smoke, whilst knowing that I could satisfy that craving once 12.00 O'clock came.
oh ack I don't know if I could have gotten through the morning coffee ritual without a cigarette! when I was teaching skiing and staying on the mountain, I would make my coffee and go outside and sit in the snow to have my morning smoke and cuppa!

Seven years without a single cigarette now. Smoked for about 15 years.

My wife was doing her LLM in the US, while I stayed in Brazil. On my first trip there I bought a box of nicotine patches to endure the 15-hour (or so) trip.
While on it, I thought "what the hell, gonna give it a try" and so, after the three months (I guess) of treatment, no cigarettes anymore.

BTW, the other thing that really, really helped was a lot of peppermint tic-tacs. The ones that really sting, they can distract the throat a lot...

Big Red gum and Altoids work for that too.

After 20 years I've been nicotine free for 9 weeks (and counting). I found a drastic cut before hand, and holding at that level for quite awhile helped me. It gave me the knowledge and confidence that I could just cut out some of the cigarettes, and knowing that has helped cut out all of them, I think.

For the first week I also disrupted my normal habits (i.e. no coffee or breakfast tea first thing, chai instead), which I also think was a big help. I almost dreaded going back to expresso's at breakfast

Lene - take it easy, and when you are ready to stop, go for it, it sounds like you've made great progress so far, good luck in the next step.

Agreed. Did the same here; it's less of a shock to the system.

Yeah, I was worried about my morning coffee as well. It's in the habits.

Congratulations and keep it up.

Eeek, this worries me. I wouldn't say I'm a smoker, but I like to smoke once in a while socially, or when drinking. Once or twice a year I just get the urge to buy a pack, so I do. I smoke maybe 3 a day, finish the pack, and forget about it.

My sister has smoked for >20 years and it really shows on her face, she has a lot of wrinkles around her mouth. I know it's vain but that is a big motivation for me to not habitually smoke.

I wouldn't worry about it too much. I was in a work and social environment (the military) that at the time more or less encouraged smoking (and drinking), to the point where oftentimes smokers would get breaks and non smokers didn't.... "smoke 'em if ya' got 'em!"

hey Lene; i tried quitting so many time too! it is mental. Posting because coincidentally today is my first smoke free day ( im on the patch so there's still nicotine in my system) which is why im typing so calmly i guess... =)
i like the advice. i am going to try the cold water thing. the moment to put this to the test will be when i go to work tomorrow (rather today). i am so in the habit of gogin out every two hours for a smoke. almost like a release to look forward to. now i have to drudge on the full 10 hours... ugh.
i think it helps not telling anyone what you are trying to do for the first two months because if you relapse its such a disappointment for everyone involved. i have made it a point to announce that I have been smoke free for two months, instead that I am trying to be smoke free...

good luck. we'll need it...

this is true. i do think my smokers friends i see out there all the time will dwindle since we don't have that commonality anymore; plus i have had joined the other side officially now (traitor? envy? jejeje). but I am 26. I am worried about my skin. I'd like to put on perfume once a day. I'd like to stop using Listerine strips, i hate those things. i hate spending a whopping 40 bux a week on my death sentence. but more importantly i want my freedom back. i've become a slave to the anxiety attacks. not cool. i'm (we're) such a strong person, hard headed and opinionated with a mouth that can make men cry and yet i seem to be weak to such a silly thing...

i am joining you lene! email me (us.. however you'd like) when you hit the milestones... no pressure! =)
