I don't want a full OS, full PC features in a tablet as I have and will always have, a laptop as my main home computing option. I'd use a tablet for reading, document mark up, watching some videos, playing some game, light web surfing etc. The iPad does most everything I want, but the price is a tad high (if the 32 GB model was $499 I'd probably jump), interface for getting PDFs, photos etc. on it could be better, I'd like flash support and multitasking etc. So I want to hold off and see what happens with Android tablets, see if we get any solid rumors on what Apple plans to add in the 2nd Generation iPad etc. before taking the plunge on a tablet device. |

The Asus and the Lenovo would also give you the SD/USB ports you want and the webcam, and the Lenovo is also rated at a 10 hour battery life. But as you say, to you the iPad seems to be the only device that suits your needs at the moment. But hopefully we've helped show you that there are other devices actually available now with a range of capabilities that could well suit other buyers. Graham |

The convertibles are good and if i were replacing a laptop then maybe but as a media consumption device any keyboard adds unnecccesary weight and size. |

But there's definitely probably a market for them, and it's great that we're going to have a wide array of tablet options to pick from so everyone can find what they need. I'll always keep a laptop, so my tablet is mainly just media consumption so I want it as thin, light and long lasting battery wise as possible. It also needs to handle HD streaming video etc. which most netbooks haven't been able to to date (maybe the convertibles are more powerful). |

Is the ipad screen actually big enough to do those two things? Not that its a big deal since I have read them on a slightly smaller screen, but certainly comics are larger than it is.

Readable in portrait, but the text is a bit small. Put it in landscape and the problem is solved. Scrolling isn't too annoying (and I though it would be) since it's so smooth and fast on the ipad. For comics, I read a free issue of Spider-man on the Marvel app and thought it looked amazing. Screen was plenty big enough. |

€550 euro for the cheapest variety + €40 (if not more) for a dongle (for a function that should have been standard in any new device), I find outrageous, yes. For that kind of money, I'd recommend a convertible to my mother, as she'll use it for pictures and some light internet browsing and chatting (MSN, Skype)

even at those prices there arent many if any convertibles available for that price which would do as nice a job as the iPad(by nice i mean with as good a quality screen for sharing the view with others, mice and light for passing around, as simple a way of letting non computer literates navigate. if you want to choose inferior screen device for the main purpose of looking at pictures then thats absolutely fine but just because there us a cheaper lower standard device available doesnt mean the iPad is overpriced. |

I got the price from a Dutch site. But the Ipad isn't available here at all. It's not even promised to come yet. But for €600, I know I can get something that fits more to my needs and wants than the Ipad.
(oh, I've also seen unconfirmed German prices of over €800...) |

You certainly could get another device for €600 euros but I think the iPAd at possibly the same price would be a more elegant better solution than a convertible tablet or laptop for what she wants. |

Here's an option available now in Europe for cheaper than the expected price of the iPad here, which dual boots into either Ubuntu and Windows. It's a 10" slate with a 160 Gb HD from the Italian company Ekoore, and has the additional ports and webcam you want:
http://www.expertreviews.co.uk/lapto...pete-with-ipad The video is impressive. Battery life will probably be lower than the iPad, but the machine is more open and more powerful. Grahan |
